This group is being created to start funding additional support for adoption promotions and spay/neuter initiatives. It is currently being led by Lisa Finkel, Bebe Wunderlich, and Sharon Malt – members of the Board of Overseers.
The MSPCA’s first promotion of the summer is launching at the end of June thanks to some of the generous support we’ve already received. Help us spread the word that “School’s Out…Cats are in!” and considering supporting these efforts with a gift to help us defray the costs of cat adoptions.
Adult cats provide one of the MSPCA’s great ongoing challenges. Every year, more adult cats find their way to us than any other type of animal. These fabulous felines arrive at our adoption centers from many sources: the numerous strays found in buildings and neighborhoods who are brought to us by a kind stranger; cats rescued from dangerous and difficult circumstances (such as hoarding situations), and, finally and sadly, cats who can no longer be kept by their owners due to illness, economic problems, or other life challenges.
This statistic suggests the need to the tackle the cat over-population issue from two angles: more adult-cat promotions AND subsidized spay/neuter programs. We’re inspired by the exceptional progress made this past year with three months worth of cat-related promotions when adoption fees (normally $150 for adults) were reduced and including two adult cat adoptathon weekends when these fees were waived. During these promotions, 1,141 adult cats were matched with their forever homes, including a number of kitties who had been in our care for months. This is a 45% increase over the same time frame as the prior year.
We know, too that with more cost and time effective spay/neuter programs – especially for low income cat owners – we would have a much better chance of reducing the amount of unwanted and homeless cats who find their way to our doors. Subsidizing these efforts helps low-income families better care for their cats and helps alleviate some behavior issues that lead to surrendering adult cats. At the same time, it also prevents these cats from reproducing, further reducing the surrender of moms & kittens.
Contributing to this success was the adoption center staff and volunteers who always do an excellent job of educating potential adopters about the many benefits of bringing a “grown-up” cat into their home…. Still the demand for kittens is as high as ever.
Where do we find the funds, passion and energy to develop and continue innovative programs that will increase spay/neuter success and make it more attractive and beneficial for individuals and families to adopt an adult cat? Enter “The Cat-vocates”: an elite group of cat-loving donors who are focused on helping MSPCA fund and implement creative programs to reduce overpopulation and find a loving home for every adult cat. Imagine a world where every healthy cat – who, by some chance, finds its way to our shelters – finds that “purr-fect match”. That’s the mission of the Cat-vocates.
Thank you for your support of animals!
