BOSTON, June 8, 2015 – Three dogs surrendered in a large plastic crate on May 26 are settling into the MSPCA-Cape Cod adoption in Centerville while the staff determines how to treat their health issues, the MSPCA-Angell announced today.
Brought to the shelter by their previous owner who claimed to have “no time” for them, the dogs—a 10-year-old Dachshund named “Buddy,” seven-year-old Miniature Pinscher “Chibby,” and a nine-year-old Rat Terrier named “Spike”—lived together in a basement in Taunton, Mass. since 2009.
It is clear that none of the dogs had seen a veterinarian in at least several years.
“All three dogs have extensive dental issues—with damaged and rotting teeth, many of which will have to come out,” said Mary Sarah Fairweather, director of the MSPCA-Cape Cod. “And Spike, the Rat Terrier, is suffering from heart worm and Lyme disease, which will also need to be treated before he can be placed for adoption.”
The dental surgeries will likely take place the week of June 8, with treatment for Spike’s heartworm happening in tandem. Chibby and Buddy are available for adoption and Spike will be placed into foster care so that his more serious health issues can be addressed before his adoption.
Despite their health concerns, Fairweather says the dogs are remarkably social. “It’s really astounding to us how friendly they are toward each other and every human who comes in contact with them, especially when one considers what these poor animals have endured. Once we get them well we’re confident they will make excellent pets.”
An Appeal for Help
The dogs’ medical bills are likely to exceed $6,000, all of which will be paid by the Guardian Angel Fund, a fund that allows the MSPCA-Cape Cod adoption center to pay for injured or sick animals, from medication and exams to surgery and recovery.
“I urge anyone who may be moved by the plight of these dogs to consider donating to our Guardian Angel Fund, which not only will help us treat these dogs, but many other animals like them,” said Fairweather.

After the dogs are treated they will be placed for adoption. “If we can find that special adopter or family who will take all three we would be delighted,” said Fairweather. “If not we’re confident they dogs will be do very well in separate homes and we expect that is in fact what will happen.”
