Loka (Puddy)
October 8, 2011

We adopted Loka on February 8th, 2011. We had lost our last Pit Bull, Blue, to cancer and we were afraid that our other dog, Desi, would be sad and lonely - so we wanted to find him a new friend as soon as possible.  Desi is a 10-year-old Rat Terrier with a big case of "little dog syndrome" (he thinks he's a 90lb Pit Bull) and epilepsy.  It's well managed, but he has more seizures when he's stressed.  Shortly after Blue was euthanized, Desi had multiple seizures.

We had already met a few Pit Bulls who were very cute that we would've adopted, but Desi just wasn't getting along with any of them.  When he met Loka, Desi was a typical "little dog" snapping at her - but Loka just walked away and let him do his thing.  For us this was perfect, Desi didn't want a dog who forced herself on him, and Loka was willing to ignore him if that's what he wanted.

We found out that Loka was given up because of severe allergies and her former family couldn't take care of her. She had coarse, thin fur and you could see her bare skin in patches, she also had chronic ear infections and cauliflower ear from scratching without treatment. Today she eats no grains or chicken and her fur is thick and soft as silk.  We're consulting a specialist about her ear but with regular cleanings she hasn't had an ear infection in months.  She also has more energy every day, which she burns off running in the woods and wrestling with Desi. She rolls on her back and waits for him to attack her and he is happy to do so.  They play all day, and in the morning they greet us and each other with "morning kisses".  We're so happy to have her as part of our family and it's clear that she's happy too.
