Canine Good Citizen Challenge

Can Pit Bulls be Good Canine Citizens?

To celebrate Pit Bull Awareness Month, MSPCA Training Coordinator and Behavior Analyst Terri Bright has set some lofty training goals for our big homeless terriers. They will be trained on the 10 components needed to pass the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test!

These skills include:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting for petting
  • Being groomed
  • Loose-leash walking
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sit-stay or down-stay at a distance of 20 feet
  • Coming when called
  • Sitting quietly near another dog
  • Not being afraid of noisy or strange things in the environment
  • Being separated from their handler

Terri and our Safewalk volunteers will be training the dogs over and above their usual routines, and our goal is to see how far we can get with training these behaviors by the time the CGC test rolls around on October 22nd.

Can we do it? Will any of the dogs earn their CGC certificate?
