Two generous grants, one for $9,000 from a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous and one for $1,000 from the Community Foundation for Nantucket, will help with trapping operations and low-cost spay-neuter surgeries for feral and stray cats on the island.
Nantucket Cat Rescue (NCR) traps and alters Nantucket’s feral cats and returns them to their “neighborhoods.” In 2009, the program trapped 268 cats. In 2010, dedicated staffers are taking a double-pronged approach to reducing the population even further.
“Targeted trapping” works intensively in one area, eventually resulting in the trapping and altering of almost 95% of the cats living there. Areas treated in this way produce almost no kittens. Low-cost spay clinics for free-roaming owned cats will reduce the number of strays cats that breed with other strays in the area. The resultant litters often produce the next generation of ferals.
The generosity of our community-minded supporters on Nantucket is making a big difference for the island’s human and feline populations!
The MSPCA offers a variety of classes from Pet Obedience to more advanced classes like Canine Good Citizen and Agility.
