Angell Unveils Advanced Imaging

December 14, 2012

Angell Animal Medical Center today underscored its reputation as a world innovator in companion animal healthcare by unveiling its new "multi-slice" CT diagnostic imaging unit. The new machine—which provides doctors with clear 360-degree internal images of pets in minutes—is the cornerstone of Angell's Diagnostic Imaging Service and underscores its commitment to remaining a technological leader in companion animal medicine.

Greater Diagnostics Lead to Improved Patient Care
The defining characteristic of the new technology is its multi-slice capabilities. By creating and linking together 16 internal images with every rotation, the new machine enables doctors to piece together a complete view of a pet's internal health in as little as 15 minutes. The machine's technology is so advanced, and the resulting images so clear, that doctors can now diagnose injury or illness in a fraction of the time, with many pets requiring only an IV-administered sedative—versus having to be placed under general anesthesia.

Said Dr. Joan Regan, a board-certified senior staff radiologist with Angell's Diagnostic Imaging Service: "The new machine is central to our goal of providing the best possible care for our patients and their families. Our pets our living longer than ever, and many go on to develop degenerative diseases (such as cancer) that also befall humans as we age. This new technology bolsters our ability to make precise diagnoses that can be addressed with increasingly sophisticated treatment protocols."

The new CT scan marks the latest milestone for the hospital, which has earned the accreditation of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)—a quality assessment achieved by only 15 percent of small-animal practices in the United States. Angell also has board-certified veterinarians in more than a dozen of its 16 specialty care areas spanning cardiology and oncology, dentistry, surgery, ophthalmology, neurology and more.
