How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears

Along with bathing, brushing and nail trimming, your dog’s basic grooming routine should include ear cleaning. Here, Roo helps demonstrate simple, step-by-step instructions for how to clean your dog’s ears.

NOTE: Never use cotton tip applicators to clean your pet’s ears. By using cotton tip applicators you may cause trauma to your pet’s ear canals and thereby create or at least contribute to the development of inflammation and infection of the ear canals. Furthermore, by using cotton tip applicators you may “push down” ear wax and debris, which in turn will make it much harder to remove.

step 1

STEP 1: Have dog sit, and position yourself behind the dog. Grasp one of the ears with one hand, hold bottle of ear cleaner with other hand.

step 2

STEP 2: Holding the ear flap (pinna) gently but firmly, squirt a generous amount of ear cleaner into the ear. DO NOT PUT TIP OF BOTTLE INTO THE EAR! Use the outer pinna as a funnel to channel the ear cleaner into the opening. Fill ear canal completely so that ear cleaner starts to run out of the ear. You can’t use too much ear cleaner.

step 3

STEP 3: While still holding the pinna (ear flap) up, massage at the base of the ear for 20-30 seconds.

step 4

STEP 4: Wipe any excess debris from the top of the ear canal with a cotton ball or gauze square. Allow the dog to shake his/her head, then wipe outer opening again. DO NOT USE Q-TIPS IN THE EAR CANAL! Repeat with the other ear.

Step-5-web

All done!
