The staff at the MSPCA-Angell Clinic at Nevins Farm first met 8-year-old Russell when his owner Genevie reached out to discuss the possibility of surrender. Russell was an important part of her family, but she had exhausted her finances when Russell began to have chronic ear infections. Genevie’s local vet told her that Russell would require a total ear canal ablation surgery (TECA) to alleviate the pain his ears were causing him. The estimate for the surgery was out of her family’s reach. Genevie, though devastated at the thought of surrender, wanted to make sure Russell received the surgery he needed to feel better.
Fortunately, Nevins Farm adoption center staff were able to provide another option—the MSPCA-Angell Clinic at Nevins Farm. The clinic in the MSPCA-Angell adoption center offers low-cost urgent care for pet owners with financial needs. The clinic coordinator contacted Genevie to schedule a consult with one of the clinic veterinarians. After meeting Russell, Nevins Farm staff veterinarian Dr. Samantha Simonelli realized Russell needed two TECA surgeries (one for each ear) and a major dental surgery. Genevie was disheartened, but her spirits brightened when she learned that she qualified for subsidized care, thanks to the MSPCA-Angell’s Pet Care Assistance Fund, funded by our generous donors. Working together, the clinic staff was able to schedule Russell for two days of surgery, all within a budget Genevie could afford.
As of this writing, Russell has already undergone one day of surgery, and Genevie eagerly anticipates the second surgery so that Russell’s health is fully restored. The family is grateful to have Russell right where he belongs: with the family that loves him!
