May arrived at the MSPCA-Angell: Cape Cod through the efforts of a local Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) clinic for stray and feral cats. May was trapped with the intent to spay her and then release her back into her neighborhood. But when the organizers of the TNVR clinic realized that May had a severe eye injury, they reached out to the MSPCA-Angell: Cape Cod for assistance. Veterinary staff at the adoption center confirmed that May was, in fact, blind, and she needed both eyes removed to alleviate the pain caused by a severe eye infection. May also had mild kidney disease that required a special prescription diet.
Though she was found as a stray, the MSPCA-Angell: Cape Cod staff discovered that May was the opposite of a feral cat. Despite her medical issues, she was outwardly friendly, leaning in for chin scratches through the bars. May's warm and affectionate nature won the hearts of staff, who knew they could address her needs and find her a loving home. While blindness in cats means they need a little extra care, they can live a full life and still make excellent companions for their families. The perfect family for May would include an adopter who spent much of their time at home and had another feline friend who could help May move around. But how to find that perfect family?
That's when the MSPCA-Angell's social media community stepped in to help. Staff posted a video of May happily kneading her paws, and the adorable cat caught the attention of Chelsey and her fiancé. The couple quickly made an appointment to meet May after marveling at her likeness to their current cat Gracie.
Recently, Chelsey shared with the Cape Cod staff that while they had natural reservations about May's medical needs and questioned how Gracie and May would get along, they just “knew” she was a match for their family. May now enjoys cruising around her new home, playing and cuddling with her new sister in between snuggles with her human family members. “Watching her adapt and join our small family has truly been the greatest joy!” said Chelsey.
