The MSPCA-Angell Cape Cod staff first met Malcolm, a 5-year-old tabby cat, in 2017, when his mom brought him to the center for neuter surgery and vaccinations through the MSPCA’s low-cost spay/neuter program. The Cape Cod team got to know Malcolm over the years as they assisted his mom through the Cape’s Pet Food Pantry Program when she struggled with health and housing-related issues. But then, in August 2021, Malcolm’s mom made the tough decision to surrender him to the adoption center when her medical needs and housing situation made it impossible to continue to care for him.
With a spicy personality from the start, Malcolm went straight into sharing an office with the center’s Community Outreach Coordinator. Malcolm loved to play and interact with people but he was unsure of anything outside the ordinary — he often responded to unique situations (e.g., meeting someone new or hearing an odd sound) with a quick swat to the person nearest him. Despite this, Malcolm was hilarious and only wanted the love and attention that all cats crave, so the Cape staff was determined to find a home just as unique as he was.
Malcolm was featured in several social media posts, radio promotions, and fee-waived adoption events, but he still hadn’t found his person after four months of waiting. The Marketing team at the MSPCA-Angell staged a social media takeover, determined to find a home for Malcolm before the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day. Their posts of his silly antics and quirks resulted in just the right person making the trek from Brighton, MA, to the Cape Cod adoption center in Centerville, MA, to meet Malcolm— and it was love at first sight!
And just like that, Malcolm found himself sleeping soundly in his new home with his new family by New Year’s Eve.
