A Helping Hand (and Paw) for Kentucky Tornado Victims
When we heard about the tornadoes that touched down in Kentucky in December 2021, staff immediately reached out to local shelters in the area to offer support. The MSPCA-Angell and our affiliate, Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS), took in 100 cats from the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) in Louisville, KY, within three days.

Michael, a 1-year-old English Spot rabbit, came to the MSPCA-Angell Boston Adoption Center after being found in a backyard in Quincy, MA. (Michael was one of 27 stray rabbits that came to the MSPCA in 2021.) The MSPCA veterinary team quickly treated Michael for ear mites and an infected eye.

Read ArticleAngell’s Historical Influence on Veterinary Medicine
For more than 100 years, Boston’s Angell Animal Medical Center — the second oldest veterinary hospital in the United States — has been at the forefront of animal care. What started as a rudimentary dirt-floored hospital that treated primarily farm animals evolved into the world-class veterinary medical facility that it is today.
With a long lists of firsts, the MSPCA-Angell has been behind some of the biggest changes in the veterinary industry, from passing Massachusetts’ first anti-cruelty laws to the first animal hospital to admit sick animals for overnight care, to conducting the first successful feline kidney transplant.
Today’s Angell, located in the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, continues to be one of the best animal care centers in the country, offering 19 specialty services that range from anesthesia to ophthalmology.
Donor Spotlights
Amy Mugherini
When it comes to the MSPCA-Angell, State Street attorney Amy Mugherini has volunteered a considerable amount of her time helping animals.
Not only does she work frequently with the adoption center’s Transport and Community Outreach program, she is also a member of our Advisory Council, a group that provides strategic guidance and support to the organization. A devoted cat mom, Amy is a frequent MSPCA-Angell feral cat adopter and she makes a point of carving out time in her busy life to attend MSPCA-Angell fundraising events, such as Raise the Woof, Fast and Furriest, and Tails and Ales.
We appreciate everything that Amy has done for the MSPCA-Angell — our work depends on generous donors like her and we are so thankful for her continued support.
Alok Kapoor
Retired information technology expert Alok Kapoor doesn’t think he’s ever met anyone who loved animals the way his late wife Karrie did. “I didn't grow up an animal lover the way my wife did, but I witnessed the bond and unconditional love Karrie shared with our dogs over the years — especially once she was diagnosed with cancer.”
While Karrie loved all kinds of animals, she especially adored Bernese Mountain dogs; she owned two of them when she and Alok first met. And it was her Berner named Baer who stood by her every step of the way through her cancer treatment, providing her with comfort and love through her last days.
Now, Baer is battling the same type of cancer that took Karrie’s life. “We’re doing everything in our power to help Baer combat this terrible disease and in a way that prolongs his quality of life,” said Alok, as Baer undergoes his own treatments at Angell.
Supporting the MSPCA-Angell in their mission of protecting animals and advancing animal health and welfare is one way Alok’s family continues to honor his wife Karrie's wishes — and honor her unending love of animals. “If our support enables the MSPCA to help others in similar situations, then we know we're making a difference.”
