Tornado-Stricken Animals Rescued 70 Years Ago
In July 2023, the governor of Vermont declared a state of emergency due to heavy rainfall, significant localized flooding, washouts, and road closures across the state. The MSPCA-Angell rallied to help more than a dozen displaced animals.
In August 1953, tornados devastated parts of Worcester County in Massachusetts.
These natural disasters took place 70 years apart, but they both had one thing in common: the MSPCA-Angell was there to help the animals in need.
The original article appeared in the August 1953 edition of the MSPCA-Angell’s historic magazine, Our Dumb Animals.
Following is the story told by our prosecuting officer of Worcester County, Harry C. Smith, of how our Society came to the rescue of animals in the tornado area:
“I started checking the farms in the tornado disaster district about two hours after the storm struck. Proceeding into the Westboro district, I got as far as the Ward farm by chopping and removing tree limbs from the road. There I found the barn flattened, but no trace of cattle. At the Aronson farm, nearby, the barn and houses were leveled and three men killed. In the fields I found a hundred head of cattle, but on examination I discovered that none were harmed. At the Harvey farm, I found five cattle trapped under the barn, but uninjured…”

Donor Spotlights
Corinne Milbury
In the summer of 2022, Corinne Milbury’s 4-year-old pug Pippa was suddenly diagnosed with meningitis. The diagnosis was devastating and likely fatal, but Dr. Jennifer Michaels, Pippa’s neurologist at the MSPCA-Angell, did all she could to help Corinne and her family fight the good fight for Pippa with “modern medicine, hope, kindness, and honest conversation.”
“On the day of Pippa’s passing, she had a traumatic — and ultimately fatal — seizure while we were away from home and unable to get to Angell,” explained Corinne. “We went to a smaller hospital with limited resources to treat her, and Dr. Michaels, while out of town on vacation, called this hospital and provided treatment guidance by phone.” Corinne had never seen an act of such compassion before and was genuinely touched by this display of loyalty and kindness from Pippa’s team at the MSPCA-Angell. “The treatment and care that we received for Pippa inspired us to make sure others can access this type of treatment for their animals, regardless of costs or circumstances,” said Corinne.
Corinne and her family love all animals and have always felt that they deserve to be treated with compassion. The family owns an English Cream Labrador named Bess and a group of “wonderful and spoiled” horses named Kavalier, Cardi, Tuuka, Zia, and Sunshine. After witnessing the love and compassion given to Pippa while she was sick, Corinne was determined to do all she could to help animals in need and positively impact her community.
“I support the MSPCA-Angell because I want to assist in ensuring that all animals and their owners are treated respectfully, have access to modern healthcare, and are institutionally protected,” she said. “No group of people on this planet is more dedicated to animal welfare, protection, and healthcare than at the MSPCA-Angell — the animals deserve our support!”
Kevin Cummings and Cummings Foundation’s Felicia Rose Grant Program
It was love at first sight when Kevin Cummings walked into the MSPCA-Angell: Boston adoption center in March 2015 and saw an 8-month-old dog named Felicia. Kevin has PTSD and severe social anxiety that makes it hard to be in crowds. Adopting Felicia gave him a new lease on life. “When she turned four, I found out I qualified for a service dog,” explained Kevin. Felicia completed her therapy dog certification, and soon the two were inseparable, ready to take on each day at each other’s side.
Because of Felicia, Kevin started the Felicia Rose Grant Program — and the first grants went to the MSPCA-Angell and Northeast Animal Shelter. “It was only fitting,” said Kevin. “The MSPCA-Angell is important to me because without the team in the Boston shelter trusting me to adopt Felicia, I wouldn’t have the confidence that I do now.” The generous grant was $100,000 over two years, and the money supported everything from the Community Outreach Program to animal transport and relocation efforts.
“Having Felicia in my life has given me a sense of purpose,” said Kevin. He encourages other animal lovers to donate to the MSPCA-Angell and other animal shelters in any way they can, including giving food, toys, treats, cleaning supplies, and money. “Animals can’t speak for themselves, and no matter the organization — whether it’s an animal shelter, a sanctuary for farm animals, or rehabilitation centers for wildlife — the animals need us to provide for them.”
Karen and Frank Field
As avid cat fans, it wasn’t until Karen and Frank Field started winding down their busy careers that they considered adopting cats of their own and becoming cat fosters. “We adopted Dolores in 2018 from the MSPCA-Angell,” explained Karen. “She and the many cats — including a couple of foster fails! — that joined our family since then see Dr. Joel Kaye and his team at Angell Animal Medical Center.”
Their cats’ care was so kind and compassionate that the Fields knew they wanted to give something back, but they weren’t sure what to do. Then they learned about the MSPCA-Angell’s Catvocates Program, a volunteer initiative that has helped thousands of cats find homes. “The program has profoundly impacted the community,” said Frank. “From promoting adoptions and waiving adoption fees to underwriting costly medical procedures for needy cats who might otherwise not find a home.” Additionally, the program offers low-cost and free spay and neuter programs that help support feral cat caretakers.
“We love that the Catvocates Community Outreach Program strives to keep families in underserved communities and their pets together,” said Karen. It gave the couple a deeper understanding that to improve animal welfare, there needs to be a focus on the families.
Karen and Frank think people who love animals should consider supporting the MSPCA-Angell. “You are not just saving the lives of animals and helping them find homes,” they said. “You are making a difference and enriching many families who will love and care for those animals. And we are committed to supporting the MSPCA-Angell in carrying out this important mission.”
