Today, with the help of our supporters, the MSPCA-Angell strongly advocates for animal-friendly legislation (read more about the most recent protection bills on the docket here). This advocacy for animals has been an important part of our history.
In 1948, a highly contentious bill called the Nolen-Miles Bill sought to convert all public pound and animal shelters — even those operated by humane organizations — into animal collection stations for public and private laboratories. Supporters defended this move as a “scientific necessity.” It was designed primarily to aid medical investigation and provide animals for scientific experiments.
The MSPCA was firmly against passing this bill that would force private organizations that served the public good (those being animal shelters and public pounds) to become “impotent satellites of other private and governmental organizations.” The MSPCA reiterated its position that animals that, for one reason or another, find their way into a public pound or animal shelter should be humanely cared for. Not only would the Nolen-Miles Bill destroy “this protective and proper procedure in Massachusetts,” but it would pave the way for other confiscatory legislation.
This version did not pass, but another version did in 1957. However, the MSPCA worked on a campaign to pass a bill in the 1980s that prevented any municipality from turning over an animal to a research facility or animal dealer — the first state to make this illegal.

Donor Spotlights
Shanna Cleveland & Beth Elliott
On January 1, 2021, an Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) veterinarian at the MSPCA-Angell Boston called Shanna Cleveland and Beth Elliott with results from the lab work conducted on their 5-year-old dog Trixie. The pup had been struggling with various symptoms that her primary care veterinarian couldn't identify, and when she suddenly grew worse, Shanna and Beth took Trixie to Angell's ECC. The veterinarian told them that Trixie had a rare complication from Lyme disease called Lyme nephritis. She needed to return to the hospital immediately if there was going to be any chance to save her life.
Over the next week, Trixie's care team worked with veterinary medical centers up and down the East Coast to devise a treatment plan involving plasma exchange and kidney dialysis, which was a first for Angell. Shanna and Beth were grateful for the team's talent, dedication, and heart. “Their hard work and compassion allowed us to bring our little girl home and give her more time to enjoy her toys, bunny chasing, and squirrel spooking.” Unfortunately, the disease returned. Trixie never fully recovered, and sadly, Shanna and Beth had to say their goodbyes.
“Before Trixie's illness, we had been strong supporters of the MSPCA-Angell,” said Beth. “But seeing firsthand the exceptional care that Angell provides to its animal patients and their human families solidified our commitment. We are glad to contribute what we can to assist the hospital in serving other animals and their human companions, as no other place does what Angell does.”
Shanna and Beth's experience led them to want to adopt from the MSPCA-Angell, and they were delighted to be partnered with Rainy from Nevins Farm. “She is another Angell miracle — most places would have given up on her due to her hip injury,” said Shanna. “We're so glad they didn't because Rainy is the best little dog!”
Darlene Woodward
“My heart has always been with the MSPCA-Angell and their mission,” said photographer and donor Darlene Woodward. She spent six years helping with that mission as a dog training instructor at MSPCA-Angell: Nevins Farm, after mentoring under senior instructor Melissa Zilembo, CPDT-KA. Darlene loves how the MSPCA-Angell offers resources designed to help keep pets and families together, from training programs to community outreach efforts. “This is so important in a world where there are just so many animals without homes,” she added.
Home is where the heart is — and for the past seven years, Darlene has put her heart into helping animals find homes by using her photography talents. “I realized that having a good portrait of a rescue animal puts them into the spotlight and gives them a better chance to connect with a family.” Through her business Pant the Town Photography, she joined a global community of artists called HeARTs Speak. The nonprofit group works to unite art and advocacy to increase the visibility of shelter animals so they have a better chance to connect with new families.
Darlene’s heartfelt giving continued in 2021 when she was inspired by her pet photographer friend to raise money for the MSPCA-Angell. “My friend Jessica Wasik of Bark & Gold Photography in Pittsburgh, PA, ran a yearly community calendar contest, and she raised considerable funds to help animals in need,” she explained. Darlene knew that while she loved helping animals find permanent homes through her portraits, she didn’t have another way to help the animals financially. “So, thanks to encouragement from my friend, a few months later, I launched the Say Paws 2022 calendar contest, and we raised more than $12,000 for the MSPCA our first year,” said Darlene. While she admitted it was daunting to start something new, having no idea how it would pan out, the fact that she could combine her love of photographing animals was a win in her book.
“I believe every animal deserves a good life — to be happy, loved, and in a safe and comfortable home,” said Darlene. “Humans can help. We need to be the voices for the animals and give them a chance in this world.”
Liberty Mutual
In 2022, Liberty Mutual Insurance celebrated its 110th anniversary! In honor of this milestone, Liberty Mutual donated $10,000 each to 110 nonprofits across the United States. The MSPCA-Angell was grateful to be one of only two Massachusetts nonprofits chosen for this special gift.
As part of their festivities, members of the local Liberty Torchbearers visited the MSPCA-Angell: Nevins Farm. During their visit, they met many of the farm’s special guests, including Jerry, an emu that some staff and visitors affectionately nicknamed the “LiMu Emu” after the popular character. Jerry was rescued by MSPCA-Angell Law Enforcement in January 2022, along with 96 goats and a young mustang mare.
Jerry and the goats are incredibly social animals — they were as excited to meet the Liberty Torchbearers as the Torchbearers were to meet them!
The MSPCA-Angell is grateful to Liberty Mutual for their ongoing commitment to provide time, talent, and resources in the community. It is thanks to this generosity that we continue to be able to rescue animals like Jerry, whose owners are no longer able to adequately provide care for their unique needs.
Illuminate
In December 2022, volunteers from Illuminate, a training and development firm that delivers customizable learning and development material for life science companies, visited the MSPCA-Angell in Boston to lend a hand for the day. The enthusiastic and ambitious 20-person team was willing to tackle every project put in front of them!
Among the challenges they helped with was the ever-present mountain of dirty dishes used by animals in the adoption center.
Several team members, including Illuminate president and founder Shaun McMahon, cleaned and sterilized various crates and cages to safely transport the shelter’s furry friends. Other members built new crates for animals — as there never seemed to be quite enough.
They cut up hot dogs, cheese, and other treats for training snacks and filled Kong® toys with peanut butter — a tasty treat that helps canine friends keep their minds busy.
They took on the arduous task of cleaning old dry-erase forms so they could be reused, helping staff increase efficiency and reduce waste.
And last but not least, the group helped fill and label dozens upon dozens of bags of cat and dog food for distribution in high-need areas of Boston. Someday, the MSPCA-Angell hopes to have enough donations to distribute full bags to all who are in need, but for now, breaking big bags into smaller containers helps us help as many different pets as possible.
“It truly was a pleasure and honor for us to help the MSPCA-Angell, a world-class nonprofit, that has helped so many pets, including many of Team Illuminate pets,” said McMahon. “We were amazed and humbled by the experience.”
The group ended their day visiting with Marge, a sweet young dog in the Boston adoption center looking for her new home.
Kerianne Durgin, MSPCA-Angell Volunteer Coordinator, shared, “The Illuminate corporate group was a wonderful set of volunteers! They were eager and excited to help in any way they could.”
The MSPCA-Angell could not be more grateful to this group for donating their time to make this work possible!
