Doves can be tamed but tend to be more “hands off” birds. They tend to vocalize throughout the day with a “coo”, dissimilar to the screeching or whistling of many other birds. Doves can be found around the world, and can live up to 10 years with proper nutrition and care. We recommend that doves live in pairs or groups whenever possible.
We recommend a cage that is at least 32”x23” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ?-¾” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of flat surfaces to perch on, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. Unlike many other species of birds, doves are unable to climb up cage bars, and tend to move back and forth making a wider cage more appealing to them. Doves should be provided with regular opportunities for bathing, and unlike parrots require grit as part of their regular diet to aid in digestion.
The needs of each dove are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the dove you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.
Stop by our Boston Adoption Center to meet Colleen. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm - 3pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

If you think Biscuit could be a good match for your home and would like to learn more, stop by our Nevins Farm Adoption Center in Methuen. We have open adoption hours Tuesday – Sunday from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm with no appointment or application needed.
Please note, in an effort to keep the stress levels reduced for the dogs in our care, our dog kennel areas will not be open to walk through. Interested adopters will work with a matchmaker on staff to determine which dog(s) they are interested in and if we can identify a match, potential adopters will be able to meet those dogs outside of the kennel. Cat and small animal areas will remain open to walk through.
This rat is part of a large surrender so we have less individual information about them. The group of females have a good history living with other females, and are social with people. They tolerate handling, but may still benefit from additional socialization, and an adopter that understands it may take them some time to warm up to their new home and the people in it. These rats will need to go home in pairs (or more) or to a home with existing female rats to have as companion.
Rats are nocturnal, highly social and extremely intelligent animals! Due to the highly social nature of rats we prefer to match them with homes with existing rats, or to adopters looking to take home two or more rats. Rats can be food driven (and great foragers!) making them excellent animals to train. We always recommend the use of positive reinforcement training with your animals, and are happy to provide more information on this topic.
We recommend providing a safe indoor enclosure that allows the rat plenty of space to exercise. The minimum cage size should be 2’x2.5’x2’, with good ventilation (no glass enclosures) and must have a solid base. Preferably the shelter includes multiple levels, with appropriate use of linens or paper bedding and lots of rat appropriate toys. Rats should never be housed with other animals, each species should always have its own housing.
The needs of each rat are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the rat you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Say hey to Ronnie! This spunky pup is ready to find his new home. While he can be slow to warm up to new friends – once you’re his buddy he loves to show off his silly, bouncy self! Ronnie loves to go on nice sniffy walks then cuddle up on the couch afterwards.
Since Ronnie is still a young pup – he still needs to learn all the basics! Ronnie would do best in a home where his new family can help him learn all the skills he will need to navigate the world.
Ronnie may be able to go to a home with another resident dog, as long as it is a good match! He would do best with complete separation to start and a slow introduction between him and the resident dog. An on campus meet is required for this match. Ronnie had no history of living with a cat in his previous home, but could do well with a dog-savvy cat with complete separation and a slow introduction to start.
As a note, Ronnie may not be able to go home the same day. This little guy needs a little bit more help than most dogs do in the home, so we want to make sure his new family is prepared before he goes to his new home!
Stop by our Cape Cod Adoption Center to meet Ronnie. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 1pm-4pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Lucy is a nature-loving girl who enjoys soaking up the sun and spending time outdoors. Shes gentle and affectionate, with a playful, silly side that comes out once she gets to know you. Lucy is also a smart pup who enjoys training and learning new things. She shares a close bond with her friend Max and loves spending time with him.
Lucy could live with another dog and has a strong history of doing so, especially with a compatible companion like Max. She may also be able to live with a cat, though she hasnt done so before and would need a thoughtful introduction. Lucy has lived with children and could do so again in a supportive home.
If you think Lucy could be a good match for your home and would like to learn more, stop by our Nevins Farm Adoption Center in Methuen. We have open adoption hours Tuesday – Sunday from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm with no appointment or application needed.

Meet Jade, a charming older gal looking for that special someone to be the center of her world. Jade is a busy lady who would thrive in a quiet environment with a consistent routine and a family who is ready to make adjustments as she continues to settle in. She lived with children in her previous home, but was worried or overwhelmed when there was too much commotion, so she would do best in a lower-traffic home–if there are kids in the home, they should be able to follow her management plan.
Jade can be a tad worried when meeting new people, but once she warms up, she is falling into your lap wanting endless pets. She says no thank you to living with dogs right now, please! Jade was reportedly scared of the cat in the previous home, so would prefer any cats in the home to be mellow and tolerant, and would need full separation onto start.
Miss Jade has a history of bladder stones, so is currently on a prescription diet. Adopters should plan to establish regular care with a vet to ensure that she’s feeling her best.
Stop by our Cape Cod Adoption Center to meet Jade. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 1pm-4pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Meet Airport Security! Airport Security is a nervous young man that will benefit from a quiet home that will give him the time and patience he needs to settle in. Airport Security enjoys other cats, and would benefit from a confident cat friend to show him the ropes. Since being in the shelter, he has so limited interest in interacting with people, and may always be more of a “cat’s cat” than a people cat. But he does enjoy chasing and playing with his cat friends! But he does enjoy With the right adopter, we are sure he can settle in and become a wonderful companion.

This sensitive shy lady is Baby Grey, a 2 year old cat looking for a new home.
Baby Grey can be worried when interacting with new people or environments, and she’s been through a lot of pretty scary transitions recently, so she’s finding shelter life to be overwhelming. She’s hoping to go to a lower-traffic home where she can work on adjusting and building confidence at her own pace.
Because she’s fearful, Baby Grey will do best with a family able to practice petting consent – meaning, letting her be the one to initiate interactions, and offering breaks when petting or grooming to ensure he’s still opting in.
If you’re looking to open your home up to a beautiful gal who’s likely to need a gentler start, then come on down to chat with us about Baby Grey! She currently lives in an office away from the main adoption area, so ask staff about her when you get here!
Stop by our Cape Cod Adoption Center to meet Baby Grey. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 1pm-4pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Meet Franklin! They have been waiting patiently at the shelter for their perfect adopter to come along. You are welcome to enter our cat rooms during open hours. Staff and volunteers will be happy to assist you!
Franklin has been overlooked due to their age – while kittens and young adults cats are often adopted quickly, many of our senior cats wait longer to find their perfect match. We think Franklin deserves the best retirement home, and adopting a senior can be extremely rewarding. They are extra grateful and so are we!
Franklin is worried, and sweet, so we’re taking it slow as we get to know them and allowing them to build up confidence at their own pace. Franklin is looking for a patient adopter who can let them adjust to a new home. Come on in to meet Franklin and see if they are a good match for your family!
