Susanna Colloredo-Mansfeld
When Susanna Colloredo-Mansfeld said, “I don’t know where I’d be without animals,” she meant it. Animals have shaped every stage of her life, from her early days riding horses at age six, to today, where her home, barn, and heart are full of rescued dogs, cats, goats, donkeys — even chickens and a rooster.
Her passion for animal welfare runs deep and wide. She’s been a dedicated MSPCA-Angell donor since 1990, and her goal is simple and powerful: to help others see the life-changing work the MSPCA-Angell does every day and to inspire them to join her in supporting it.
Susanna first connected with the MSPCA-Angell through Nevins Farm. She took in several of the horses on the farm through the winter and covered the cost of their care. That experience opened her eyes to the full scope of MSPCA-Angell’s work, and she kept learning, giving, and getting involved. Over the years, she’s grown close with staff members across the nonprofit, building trusted relationships that make her feel confident in every gift she makes. “People have worked so hard to get the MSPCA-Angell where it is today,” she says. “We have to keep going.”
Her advocacy efforts extend past the MSPCA-Angell’s Methuen farm. Susanna helped establish national welfare guidelines for polo ponies and was later honored with the Clint Nangle Equine Animal Welfare Award for her efforts. She’s especially passionate about programs that teach kids about animals and their habitats. Her ties to Appleton Farms and interest in expanding its educational reach show just how forward-thinking she is, and she’s always looking for ways to help the next generation care better and do more.
“Animals don’t have their own voice,” Susanna says. “They need us.” It’s this belief that fuels her philanthropy. Her most recent gift of $1 million over the next ten years to the nonprofit supports the “Bear Fund,” in honor of Bear, her dog, whom she adopted from the MSPCA-Angell. And while she understands there’s never enough funding to help every animal in need, she’s determined to remain part of the solution. “I’m glad that I can give — and I hope others will be moved to do the same,” she said.
Tori and Bob Haring-Smith
For nearly half a century, Tori and Bob Haring-Smith have turned to the MSPCA-Angell whenever one of their cats needed specialty or emergency care. They’ll tell you, without hesitation, that MSPCA-Angell is “the best place in the country — if not the world.”
Their connection to MSPCA-Angell goes beyond trusted veterinary care. Tori and Bob have been rescuing and rehoming cats since before they were married. Their love for animals and deep understanding of the challenges homeless pets face have shaped their lives and their home. When Tori served as president of Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania, she and Bob transformed the second and third floors of the official presidential residence, a large Victorian, into a cat sanctuary. They not only opened their doors to these animals, but they also ensured each one received veterinary care and a new beginning.
Today, Tori and Bob share their New Hampshire home with seven cats, each with their own personality and backstory. There’s Peter and Paul, rehomed after their previous owner developed severe allergies; Lucy, a once-undersocialized kitten they’re gently helping come out of her shell; Keats, their 17-year-old elder; Kalinka, whose name means “my very special little berry”; Rama, a big Siamese mix whose diet is finally working; and Hector, who has a black stripe down his nose like a gladiator’s helmet. Years ago, when they relocated from Pennsylvania, they moved with 12 cats. And before that? They lived in Egypt for three years and brought six cats home with them.
Their gift to the MSPCA-Angell is rooted in experience, empathy, and gratitude. After 45 years of relying on MSPCA-Angell’s collaborative, expert care, they wanted to give back to the organization they trust most. What drives their generosity is simple: a belief that animals can’t speak for themselves, and that it’s our job to be their voice. They also believe in giving locally, where their support can make the most significant difference.
“We have made these animals our companions, and we owe them support and care,” they added. “Some people say ‘give until it hurts,’ but we say ‘give until you smile.’”
Mary Kariotis
For Mary Kariotis, supporting the MSPCA-Angell is both a personal calling and a powerful way to give back to a place that gave so much to her and her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Copper.
At 16, Copper lived a long and cherished life, despite having heart disease and a degenerative spinal condition. “He wasn’t just a dog,” Mary said, “He was my fifth child.” And throughout his life, MSPCA-Angell’s medical team was by their side, offering medical care, compassion, and unwavering support. When it was time to say goodbye, Copper’s veterinarian met her outside in MSPCA-Angell’s parking lot in Boston, a simple gesture of empathy she’ll never forget. The next day, both Copper’s primary vet and a specialist called to check in with Mary. “It was an extraordinary act of kindness,” she recalled.
Now, Mary’s family has welcomed a new Cavalier puppy, and Copper’s medical team at the MSPCA-Angell shares in their excitement. “To me, MSPCA-Angell isn’t just a world-class hospital —it’s a vital part of the community,” she says. “They’re experts in every specialty, but their commitment to compassion is what truly sets them apart.”
Mary is also inspired by the hospital’s deep commitment to helping the most vulnerable animals. She recalls a time when she witnessed a frantic woman rush into the ER with her injured dog, and when the woman couldn’t pay, MSPCA-Angell took the dog in without hesitation. “That one moment said everything,” Mary recalled.
“I believe animals have souls,” she said. “And there are so many people who love their pets deeply but can’t afford emergency care. That’s why I give to the MSPCA-Angell. My donations honor Copper’s life and help others get the same level of care and kindness that we received.”
Julianna Manzi
Julianna Manzi, founder and CEO of Names for Good, a custom bracelet company, recently pledged significant funding to support the MSPCA-Angell’s mission. And through a special MSPCA-Angell Collection, a portion of every sale helps protect and care for animals in need.
At the heart of this partnership is her beloved dog named Buoy. “She was my first baby,” Julianna said. “Before I became a mom to three beautiful girls, it was just Buoy and me.”
Buoy, an Australian Labradoodle, has been by Julianna’s side through countless chapters of her life, offering love and comfort. That kind of bond is what fuels her support of the MSPCA-Angell.
“I’ve always believed the love we have for our pets is one of the purest kinds of love there is,” she said. “And in return, we get their unconditional love, no matter what kind of day we’re having. Supporting the MSPCA-Angell means helping other animals find that same love, that same second chance.”
Julianna sees the bracelets in the MSPCA-Angell collaboration as tiny symbols of something bigger. “Each bracelet is a way to keep our pets close while helping those still waiting,” she says. “It’s something that feels really meaningful to me.”
Julianna believes that it’s on all of us to speak up for animals. “It’s our responsibility,” she said. “And supporting organizations like the MSPCA-Angell means we’re helping ensure every animal gets the chance to feel safe, cared for, and loved, just like our pets do.”
