Medication Preparation Volunteer

Med prep volunteers assist clinic and shelter staff with preparing daily medications for shelter animals. Preference will go to applicants who have experience in the veterinary medicine field or significant experience medicating personal pets. Applicants with significant experience in human medicine are also encouraged to apply!

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare a variety of medications for cats, dogs, and small animals based on daily medication sheet
  • Cross reference various materials (e.g. prescription bottle, medication sheet) to ensure information and dosing is accurate
  • Refer to tip sheets to learn how an animal best takes medication
  • Ensure administered medications are properly signed off on by staff
  • After demonstrating capability and commitment, there may be the opportunity to learn how to administer certain medications to certain animals

Necessary Skills:

  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as a member of a team
  • As medications are administered on a schedule, applicants to this role should be timely and reliable
  • Experience in veterinary or human medicine strongly preferred
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of this role, which include variable amounts of standing, walking, bending, reaching and stooping among other actions
  • Able to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • This role requires frequent verbal and written communication and as such, applicants should be highly proficient in English
  • Proficiency in using a computer without assistance and learning new programs. All volunteers digitally log hours and use an online scheduling function.

Requirements:

  • Applicants to this role must be able to pass a Massachusetts CORI check
  • A minimum commitment of six months
  • A weekly shift on a set day and time
  • Attendance at orientation and on-the-job training
  • Must be 18 or older

Available shifts:

  • Volunteers commit to one shift weekly
  • We are unable to accommodate requests for alterations to the schedule. Please ensure you will be available for the full duration of a shift before applying.
    • Morning: 7:30-9:00am – Monday, Thursday, Sunday
    • Afternoon: 2:30-4:30pm – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
