Shelter Care Volunteer

Description:

Shelter Care volunteers contribute important behind-the-scenes work to do essential tasks that allow our staff and volunteers to complete animal care effectively and efficiently. This role does not directly handle or interact with animals. It is a great opportunity for those seeking community service hours for college or National Honors Society; or those who are seeking a volunteer role with more flexibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Wash, dry, fold and put away laundry
  • Clean, disinfect and put away dishes, litter boxes, and other items
  • Sort and put away donations
  • Various cleaning and organizational tasks as needed
  • This role does not handle animals, but directly supports their needs!

Necessary Skills:

  • Ability to be self-directed and effectively prioritize tasks
  • Willingness to clean items soiled with feces and urine
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate and work with other volunteers and staff
  • Receptive to ongoing feedback
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of this role, which include variable amounts of standing, walking, bending, reaching and stooping among other actions
  • Able to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • This role requires frequent verbal and written communication and as such, applicants should be highly proficient in English
  • Proficiency in using a computer without assistance and learning new programs. All volunteers digitally log hours and use an online scheduling function

Requirements:

  • A minimum commitment of three months
  • A weekly shift on a set day and time, with some flexibility in scheduling
  • Attendance at orientation and on-the-job training

Available Shifts: 

  • Variable 1.5-2 hour shifts between 7:30am-5:00pm, weekdays
