Cat Caregiver Volunteer

Do you want to hear a choir of meows as you open a can of cat food? Are you an early riser who’s excited to clean up after playful kittens? Then volunteering as a Cat Caregiver at the MSPCA is the right role for you!

Cat Caregiver volunteers provide care to shelter cats, ensuring their living environment remains safe, clean and as comfortable as possible. Volunteers will learn about cat body language through certification in Fear Free handling and how to care for cats in a shelter environment. Cat care takes place in the morning. Role of a Volunteer:

• Provide care to 20 to 40 cats in our main adoption room or cats from recent transports
• Clean, disinfect enclosures, and provide food, water, litter, toys and bedding and socialize the cats
• Document medical and behavior observations of cats cared for
• Assist with other shelter tasks such as washing dishes and laundry

Volunteer Necessities:

• Stay active the full duration of a shift, with variable amounts of standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and kneeling
• Safely use a stepladder to access cat kennels, food, and linen storage
• Ability to lift, push, pull or carry objects and/or animals weighing up to 40 lbs
• Use skills from Fear Free handling to safely interact with cats and monitor their body language

Commitment:

• At least six months – if this time is a barrier, please note in your application to discuss with the Volunteer Coordinator
• One weekly 3-hour shift on the same day each week
• Attend a volunteer orientation, receive on-the-job, and complete Fear Free certification at home

Available Shifts:

• All days of the week: 8:30am – 11:30am
• Animal care only takes place at the above time, so please ensure your availability before applying to this particular role
