North Atlantic Right Whales

One of the largest mammals on earth, the North Atlantic right whale spends part of the year off the Massachusetts coast. Right whales concentrate around Cape Cod Bay and the Great South Channel east of Nantucket Island in small numbers from December to March, and in larger numbers in April and May.

More than a dozen species of dolphins and porpoises are known to have inhabited Massachusetts waters. Some of the more commonly seen ones are the Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), and the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena).
