Yesterday Massachusetts lawmakers passed legislation to strengthen the existing antifreeze law that will help keep animals safe, an issue for which MSPCA-Angell’s Advocacy team has been lobbying steadily for years.

2010 – Retail Bittering Agent and Antifreeze Law

Most automotive antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which is highly toxic to animals and humans and can produce life-threatening kidney damage, even in small amounts. This law requires the addition of a bittering agent to retail containers of antifreeze. This law took effect on January 1, 2011.

As of April 7, 2011, a law provides Massachusetts residents the ability to form a legally enforceable trust to provide for the care of one or more animals if the owners become incapacitated or die.
