More than a dozen species of dolphins and porpoises are known to have inhabited Massachusetts waters. Some of the more commonly seen ones are the Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), and the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena).
