Maximum Capacity: MSPCA-Angell Sounds Alarm for Small Animal Adopters as Cages Fill Up!

Organization Waiving Adoption Fees at All Four Adoption Centers This Weekend

BOSTON, Aug. 3, 2023 – The MSPCA-Angell is waiving adoption fees for small animals at all its adoption centers this weekend, August 4 through August 6. The event comes as space for housing the birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, and more small animals is completely full—with one shelter even having to put cages in the lobby.

“It’s absolutely critical that adopters step up and take some of these guys home,” said Bryn Rogers, MSPCA-Angell assistant director of adoptions and programs. “We want to be there for people in the community who need to surrender small animals, but we won’t be able to do that if we can’t free up some space.”

Rogers cites a slowdown in adoptions for the capacity problem. “Adoptions for small animals are down 24 percent this year compared to last,” she explained.

“We’ve been spending a lot of time and attention this summer on dogs, and for good reason given the ongoing national crisis, but we still need to find homes for a lot of other animals in our care.”

Save on Adoption Fees!

Animals whose adoption fees will be waived this weekend include rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, ferrets, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, degus, and birds. Those fees vary between $15 and $85—money that can be put toward the care of these new pets.

The event will take place at all MSPCA adoption centers—in Boston, Salem, Centerville, and Methuen. Adopters looking to add a small pet to their family may learn more and register at www.mspca.org/feewaived. Registration is recommended, but not required.
