This cockatiel was part of a large seizure of birds, and as such we have very limited history on what they are like in a home. The group has shown to on the worried/undersocialized side, but tend to get along well with their fellow companions. This bird should go home either with one or more companions from its group or to a home with existing cockatiel companions. Adopters should be prepared to give the bird time to adapt to the home, and any people/birds in it, as well as be comfortable working on additional socialization.
Cockatiels can be social, cuddly, goofy, and tend to love whistling! Native to the semi-arid regions of Australia, these ground foraging birds can live up to 20 years with proper nutrition and care, and can be a loyal companion. Cockatiels tend to not be major talkers, but instead prefer to chirp or whistle. We recommend that cockatiels live in pairs or groups whenever possible. Cockatiels can live up to 20 years with proper nutrition and care, and can be a loyal companion.
We recommend a cage that is at least 27”x24” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ½” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of perches, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. As natural foragers, cockatiels may benefit from having their food scattered at the bottom of their cage to allow for extra enrichment and to satisfy their natural instincts.
The needs of each cockatiel are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the cockatiel you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.
