Hundreds of Animals in Need of Homes

BOSTON, June 8, 2026 – The MSPCA-Angell at Nevins Farm in Methuen is holding an open house to begin identifying prospective adopters for farm animals of various species, the organization announced today.

The event—called Come Say Hay—will take place Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Over the past six months, operations at Nevins Farm have been running at capacity while caring for hundreds of farm animals connected to law enforcement activity. Up until now, those animals were unavailable for adoption while court proceedings remained underway.

“The MSPCA-Angell is the only shelter system in the region equipped to accommodate large volumes of farm animals from seizures and surrenders,” explained Kaycie McCarthy, Equine and Farm Animal Outreach and Rescue Manager at the MSPCA-Angell.

“Since the start of the year, we’ve taken in 398 farm animals through law enforcement activity alone, including 317 from a single property in January,” stated McCarthy. “That’s in addition to the animals we receive from animal control agencies and local surrenders. Needless to say, our space and resources are stretched thin.”

“Now that we’ve gained custody of these farm animals, we’re finally able to start finding them homes. While we’re eager to do so, we also want to make sure each animal’s unique needs are met, and we’re hopeful this event will help us find adopters who understand those needs.”

Building Connections

During the event, adopters will have the chance to meet the animals and speak with shelter staff to begin the matchmaking process.

While the majority of animals featured at the open house will be birds, including chickens and ducks, those interested in adopting horses, goats, cows, pigs, and even zebus—a first for the MSPCA-Angell—are also encouraged to attend.

“We have lots of birds available for adoption, and we’re especially hoping to reach people interested in adopting roosters because they’re often harder to place,” McCarthy noted. “That said, there really is an animal for everyone depending on what they’re looking for, and we’re counting on the farm animal community to come out and show their support.”

Although adopters should not anticipate bringing animals home during the event, many of the animals are expected to be ready for placement shortly thereafter.

McCarthy went on to say, “Regardless of the type of animal, many of them came to us in need of medical care and are at different stages in their rehabilitation journeys. By hosting this open house, our goal is to start identifying thoughtful matches now so everything is lined up when the time is right for each animal to go to their new home.”

Come Say Hay!

The open house will be held on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MSPCA-Angell at Nevins Farm on 400 Broadway in Methuen, MA.

No RSVP is required. Those who are interested in adopting a specific animal are welcome to submit an inquiry form in advance at mspca.org/openhouse, though it is not necessary to attend.

“We’re looking forward to connecting with everyone who comes out. Not only are we finally able to find the homes these animals deserve, but we can also start preparing for the next group of animals that need us!”
