Mashpee Fur Ban

About the proposed fur bylaw

Article 33 prohibits the sale of new fur products in Mashpee, including clothing, accessories, and home décor made of animal fur. Every year, tens of millions of foxes, mink, and raccoon dogs are confined in cruel conditions and killed for their fur, most on unregulated farms overseas where no animal welfare or humane slaughter laws apply. Fur farms are also breeding grounds for dangerous zoonotic diseases like COVID and avian flu, and fur production carries the largest negative environmental impact per kilogram of any material used in fashion.

Not affected by this bylaw: used & vintage fur; leather, shearling, wool, cowhide, etc.; Native American tribal, cultural, or spiritual purposes; taxidermy; Religious use; activity expressly authorized by federal or state law.

The Mashpee Select Board unanimously recommends Article 33 to end the sale of new fur products in the town. Eight Massachusetts communities have already passed similar measures.
