Pet Insurance

The MSPCA-Angell believes pet health insurance is important because of the vital role it plays in facilitating necessary medical care for pets and providing a financial safety net for families following unforeseen events. Veterinary insurance can offset a major unexpected vet bill, helping to pay for medical emergencies, hospitalization, surgery, tests/diagnostics, treatment of illnesses and a range of care depending on the chosen insurance plan. Most importantly, pet insurance allows families to choose treatments for their ill or injured pets based on the best medical option available without sacrificing their financial well-being.

The MSPCA-Angell works tirelessly to raise funds to supplement veterinary care for animals in need, but funds are limited, and insurance is often the best way to ensure veterinary financial assistance in times of need. There are many pet health insurance providers with a variety of plans to meet the needs and budgets of pet owners. Some policies cover wellness as well as accidents and illnesses, and some plans only include accidents or illnesses (excluding pre-existing conditions). Depending on the insurance plan, there is usually a deductible that must be met. After meeting the deductible, the insurance plan covers a certain percentage of the veterinary bill and the pet owner pays the rest.

One difference between human health insurance and pet health insurance is the freedom of choosing a healthcare provider. Unlike the networks of providers that frequently accompany human health insurance, most pet health insurance plans allow you to choose where you seek care for your pet. It is important to understand what your policy covers and what it excludes. For this reason, the MSPCA-Angell has a Pet Insurance Coordinator who can help you navigate the choices and better understand the benefits, costs and coverage associated with various providers. Email insurancecoordinator@mspca.org or call (617) 655-9628. The MSPCA-Angell does not sell pet insurance or have exclusive arrangements with specific insurance providers, our goal is to support you and provide information to help you.

Just as providing proper nutrition, a safe environment, and ample exercise are key to ensuring your pet’s good health, pet insurance also can be an essential part of your pet’s plan of care and your peace of mind.
