BOSTON and Salem, Mass., July 14, 2022 – The MSPCA-Angell and the Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) are waiving adoption fees for rabbits and guinea pigs this weekend — Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17. It’s the third weekend this year the two organizations have waived fees for small animal adoptions.
The event follows a massive increase in the number of guinea pigs and rabbits surrendered to the MSPCA. In the last three months, the MSPCA’s adoption centers in Boston, Methuen and Centerville on Cape Cod, and NEAS’ Salem shelter have received more than 210 guinea pigs and rabbits. And, they’re staying in the shelters nearly twice as long as their dog and cat counterparts.
Adopters who take advantage of the weekend adoptathon will save $85 per rabbit and $30 per guinea pig, money that can be re-applied toward the care of these new pets.
