MSPCA-Angell Treating Stray Puppy After Hit-By-Car Incident

The Search for an Owner Continues

BOSTON, August 11, 2026 – Five-month-old “Lark” is recovering in the care of the MSPCA-Angell after undergoing surgery to amputate her leg following a hit-by-car incident, the organization announced today.

The Siberian Husky was brought to Angell Animal Medical Center by Boston Animal Control in the late evening on August 7.

“On Lark’s physical exam, we found that she had sustained a severe degloving injury to one of her back legs,” noted Dr. David Carabetta, Criticalist at the MSPCA-Angell in Boston. “This means the skin and some of the underlying tissue had been torn away, leaving much of her limb exposed.”

Dr. Carabetta went on to say, “Once we finished her initial evaluation and had a better understanding of her external injuries, we started Lark on pain medication to keep her comfortable, and antibiotics to prevent infection. We also thoroughly cleaned and bandaged her leg.”

After receiving initial treatment to stabilize her, Lark was transferred to the MSPCA-Angell’s Boston Adoption Center for continued care. Her X-rays showed an extensive fracture, and the veterinary team determined Lark’s injuries were too significant for her leg to be saved, making amputation the most appropriate treatment.

“We’re thankful she survived this injury and was brought into our care,” said MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection, Mike Keiley. “We’re fortunate to have veterinary teams across our hospitals and community clinics whose expertise allows us to perform advanced diagnostics, carefully weigh every option, and determine a treatment plan with the animal’s best interest in mind.”

Next Steps for Lark

Lark’s surgery was performed at the MSPCA-Angell’s Larson Kelly Community Clinic in Boston on August 10. As she continues her recovery, the MSPCA-Angell and Boston Animal Control are working together to locate her owner and identify the driver involved in the incident. The collision was not reported by the driver, as required by Massachusetts law.

“It’s possible Lark has a family out there who’s been searching for her,” Keiley noted. “If that’s the case, we want them to know she’s safe and receiving the care she needs.”

“If an owner doesn’t come forward after the required seven-day stray hold, we’ll begin the search for an adopter once she’s medically cleared,” said Keiley
