Hill’s Pet Nutrition Product Recall: Certain Canned Dog Food

February 5, 2019

You may have heard about the recent Hill’s Pet Nutrition product recall, which affects certain lots of multiple retail and prescription canned dog food diets. Our hospitals and shelters were impacted by this recall and we are proactively reaching out to clients to inform them of the recall and proper steps to take.

The message to pet parents directly from Hill’s Pet Nutrition is as follows:
“Hill’s Pet Nutrition is voluntarily recalling select canned dog food products due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure, and dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D, when consumed at very
high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction. Pet parents with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed and are exhibiting any of these signs should contact their veterinarian. In most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.

Pet parents who purchased the product with the specific lot/date codes listed should discontinue feeding and dispose of those products immediately or return unopened product to your retailer for a refund. For more information, please contact Hill’s via our website or at 1-800-445-5777.”

The potentially affected food shipped out to clinics within the last five months. A list of the impacted diets along with the specific lot numbers can be found by clicking this link: hillspet.com/productlist. This recall only involves canned (wet) dog food. No dry foods, cat foods, or treats are affected.

Please follow the steps below:

  1. Review your remaining supply of canned dog food and check the lot number(s) against the list above. If you can’t access the link above or need help, call us at 617-524-5700.
  2. If you identify product lots that are affected, stop feeding the diet and replace the food.
  3. If your supply of food does not contain lot numbers referenced on the above list, the food is safe to feed and you should continue using it.
  4. Call or email the Pharmacy (617) 524-5700 or pharmacy@angell.org to arrange for a replacement or refund.

We understand that recall situations like this can be alarming and concerning, and we encourage you to reach out to us for help and support. Please note that all clinical questions or questions about any specific or potential impact to your pet’s own health will be referred to your pet’s veterinarian.
