Summer 2024 Shelter Care – Methuen

Description:

Shelter Care volunteers assist staff in ensuring the shelter environment remains safe, clean and as comfortable as possible for animals, staff, and volunteers.

This role is a great option for those seeking community service hours for National Honor Society or college applications. It is appropriate for individuals who are seeking a summer 2024 volunteer opportunity, but who do not meet the intensive scheduling or other requirements for our AWS Volunteer Intern role.

Responsibilities:

  • Wash, dry, fold, and put away laundry.
  • Wash, dry, and put away dishes, litter boxes, and other items.
  • Sort donations.
  • Empty trash and recycling.
  • Clean and disinfect shelter areas.
  • Train other volunteers on Shelter Care tasks.
  • Miscellaneous tasks as requested by staff.
  • In times of high need, Shelter Care volunteers may be asked to assist with cleaning dog kennels.
  • This role will not involve hands-on animal care, but directly supports their needs.

Qualities/Skills:

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to follow direction.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a self-directed manner.
  • Willingness to clean areas soiled with feces and urine.
  • Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment. This role may not be a suitable match for individuals who do best with limited, routine tasks.
  • Ability to perform physical labor for the duration of shift, use stepladder, and lift and/or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • A can-do attitude is a must for this role!
  • Proficiency in using a computer without assistance, and learning new programs. All volunteers digitally log hours and use an online scheduling function.

Requirements:

  • Attendance at virtual orientation. These are offered 2-3 times a month, on weekdays.
  • Attendance at a training shift. Currently, we are only able to offer these on weekends.

Time Commitment:

  • One weekly 2 hour shift on a set day and time. Please ensure one of the shifts listed as currently available matches your summer schedule before applying.
  • 7am-9am shifts available are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
  • 3pm-5pm shifts available are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
  • Minimum Commitment is 7 weeks during the summer of 2024, starting no later than June 30th. Weeks should be mostly consecutive, with no gaps greater than a week. Trainings require one-time weekend availability. Extended commitments welcome!
