Description:
This is a great opportunity for someone who is excited to engage with the public and be involved in all that we do at the MSPCA Boston Adoption Center. The Adoption Assistant will assist staff in facilitating matchmaking appointments, putting together adoption folders, and gathering needed supplies. Adoption Assistants need to have strong customer service skills, be adaptable to the changing needs of the adoption center, and be excited to be a representative of the MSPCA and our programs.
Responsibilities:
- Greet Boston Adoption Center visitors and answer basic questions.
- Direct visitors based on their reason for coming to the shelter. (Adoption appointment, surrender appointment, just looking, etc.)
- Assist with adoptions by helping with small animal or cat matchmaking, putting together adoption folders, prepping supplies, and carriers for animal to go home with.
- Monitor visitor interactions with adoptable animals and ensure that people refrain from improperly handling them or interacting with animals that are not available for adoption.
- Break down cages of animals who went home and set up for new animals.
- Help with Shelter Care duties – dishes, laundry, and sorting donations.
- Help with other Adoption Center needs as they arise.
- If qualified – may help staff get animals ready to leave by putting them into a carrier or putting on walking equipment.
Qualities/Skills:
- Previous experience handling or working with cats and small animals.
- Some knowledge of animal body language.
- Excellent customer service skills with an empathetic, non-judgmental approach.
- Ability to work independently and with other volunteers and staff.
- Being bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus!
- This shift requires a combination of standing and walking for the duration of the shift.
- Emotional ability to handle difficult situations involving animals.
- Remain flexible during shift which includes the willingness and ability to quickly respond to changing circumstances.
Requirements:
- A commitment of at least six months.
- A weekly 3-4 hour shift on a set day and time.
- Attendance at a virtual orientation and on-the-job training
- Must learn and understand MSPCA adoption policies and procedures.
Available Shifts:
- Shifts are from 12pm-3/4pm.
- Thursday, Friday, and Sunday
