Shelter Care Volunteer
Shelter Care volunteers are people who thrive in a clean space! Maybe the thought of laundry excites you and cleaning dirty dishes is your forte. Our Shelter Care volunteers are dedicated to keeping the shelter premises clean and clear of any dirt, debris, and general messes. This is a great and impactful role if you consider yourself a “clean freak”!
This role is a great option for those seeking community service hours for National Honor Society or college applications.
Position Summary
Shelter Care volunteers assist staff in keeping the shelter clean, sanitized, and organized. Their regular responsibilities include doing laundry, cleaning dishes, wiping down high-use surfaces, sweeping and mopping floors, prepping enrichment items, and taking out trash.
Volunteers will be given training and resources to stay up to date with considerate approaches protocol when working in the proximity of animals. It is important to maintain consistency and routine as much as possible, therefore the volunteer will be expected to follow protocol and the guidance of staff closely.
Responsibilities:
- Wash, dry, fold, and put away laundry.
- Wash, dry, and put away dishes, litter boxes, and other items.
- Sort donations.
- Empty trash and recycling.
- Clean and disinfect shelter areas.
- Train other volunteers on Shelter Care tasks.
- Miscellaneous tasks as requested by staff.
- In times of high need, Shelter Care volunteers may be asked to assist with cleaning dog kennels.
- This role will not involve hands-on animal care, but directly supports their needs.
Qualities/Skills:
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a self-directed manner.
- Willingness to clean areas soiled with feces and urine.
- Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment. This role may not be a suitable match for individuals who do best with limited, routine tasks.
- Ability to perform physical labor for the duration of shift, use stepladder, and lift and/or pull up to 50 pounds.
- A can-do attitude is a must for this role!
Requirements:
- Attendance at virtual orientation. These are offered 2-3 times a month, on weekday evenings.
- Attendance at a training shift.
Commitment Level:
- One weekly 1-3 hour shift on a set day and time. Please ensure one of the shifts listed as currently available matches your schedule before applying.
- Minimum Commitment is 4 consecutive months after onboarding. This may take up to a month after acceptance and is dependent on your availability for an orientation and training. Training requires one-time weekend availability. Extended commitments welcome!
Current Needs
- Weekday shifts currently available are Wednesday and Friday evenings (4pm – 7pm)
- Weekend shifts currently available are Saturday afternoons (11am – 2pm) and evenings (4pm – 7pm)
