Northampton Traveling Wild and Exotic Animal Acts

Northampton residents:
Contact Northampton City Councilors
Prohibit the use of wild and exotic animals for entertainment

An ordinance to protect wild animals used in traveling shows has been introduced in Northampton, and we’re asking for YOUR voice to help pass this important measure. On November 14, the proposed ordinance will be heard before the Committee on Legislative Matters.

Please send a quick email to citycouncil@northamptonma.gov to voice your support. Be sure to include your address so the Councilors know you are a Northampton resident!

The ordinance, #22.192, prohibits the use of wild and exotic animals for entertainment in Northampton. Performing wild animal acts subject intelligent, social animals to abusive treatment and near-constant travel where they are deprived of exercise and the ability to express their most basic, natural behaviors. These shows also present public safety dangers, putting the audience at risk of physical attack or the contraction of zoonotic diseases.

This ordinance would NOT impact non-animal performances like Circus Smirkus.

Please contact your City Council members at citycouncil@northamptonma.gov and ask them to support ordinance #22.192—and be sure to include your address.
