“Gary’s” Big Day Arrives and Angell Animal Medical Center’s Dr. Mike Pavletic is at the Ready
BOSTON, August 18, 2016 – In a career spanning nearly four decades, Dr. Mike Pavletic of the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center has performed miracles for countless animals who arrived at the 24-7 emergency and specialty hospital with significant pain and very little hope.
Whether he is re-attaching a cat’s face after it had been torn off by the fan belt of a car; performing a first of its kind muscle transplant to enable a badly injured Border Collie to walk again after an accident that all but paralyzed her; to constructing a functional foot for Maverick, the German Shepherd who chewed his own foot, Dr. Pavletic pushes the surgical innovation envelop at every turn.
But sometimes the most talented hands in the veterinary surgery world are called upon to… neuter a goat. And that is just what Dr. Pavletic did today when “Gary” arrived at the venerable Boston animal hospital this morning for castration.
Gary is not just any goat. He is one of the 46 goats the MSPCA rescued from a Montague, Mass. property in May—the largest single surrender of goats in the organization’s history—who has been re-settled with an adoptive family in Lynnfield.
Neutering Gary is essential not only to ensure he does not father any more goats but to keep him calm and friendly toward people and the other animals with whom he shares his new property.
Gary’s neuter took less than an hour which, for Dr. Pavletic, is all in a day’s work. “Obviously this is one of the least challenging procedures I’ve been involved with in recent years—but I take it no less seriously as, just like any other animal patient, we want him to recover quickly and get right back home.”
Gary is expected to spend the day in the hospital before he is discharged.
