Cats Will Be Available For Adoption Once They Are Fully Recovered
BOSTON and Centerville, Mass., March 29, 2023 – It is rare for purebred, exotic cats to appear in animal shelters, but the MSPCA-Angell’s Cape Cod Adoption Center is rehabilitating and readying for adoption nearly than a dozen of them. The eight Abyssinian cats arrived in Centerville on Friday, March 24, and more may be coming this week.
“The previous owner in Bristol County was a breeder who got into a bad spot,” explained Director of Operations at the MSPCA Cape Cod Adoption Center, Colleen Evans. “They had more animals than they were able to care for and couldn’t provide them with stable housing or the medical care they needed.”
“So, the breeder made the right decision to surrender them to local animal control, which transferred the cats to us for treatment, housing and, eventually, adoption,” she added.
A Rare Occurrence
“It’s not often we get these kinds of purebred, exotic cats, let alone in these numbers,” elaborated Evans, noting that these are the first Abyssinian cats the organization has received in the past five years—and the first time it has received multiple of the breed in more than a decade.
“They’re very popular not just because they’re active and affectionate, but also because of their unique look, especially their rather large ears,” she added.
TLC and Treatment on the Way
“The cats need some medical treatment before they’ll be ready to go to new homes,” said Evans. “They’re dealing with gastrointestinal issues, and a few also have some minor upper respiratory infections.”
The cats are undergoing treatment and are expected to recover in the next two weeks.
“Despite the unrest and discomfort of their ordeal, these cats are incredibly friendly. They’ll be wonderful pets when they’re ready to go to new homes,” added Evans.
