Calling all hackney pony lovers! Freddie is a young, recently gelded hackney pony who is looking for a special adopter. Freddie came to us as an extremely nervous little guy, with minimal handling in his past. He has slowly shown us that he really wants to be affiliative with humans but he needs a little more time to convince himself that everything is going to be ok from now on!
Freddie has just started learning the basics of ground manners including haltering and leading. Freddie can be conflicted about touch and close handling, so we have been working on catching and haltering on a daily basis. He has already made so much progress! He will sometimes still flinch when you approach him with the halter and may even sometimes move away a few steps, but we’re past the days where he would flee at the sight of us, and we couldn’t be more proud of how far he’s come in such a short period of time. With the right person we are confident he will only continue to grow into a sweet and silly companion.
Freddie is still extremely nervous for both the farrier and veterinarian, and does require sedation during those appointments at this time. As his world continues to open up we are confident he will continue to progress and gain the confidence he needs to handle these routine care visits, however adopters should be ready to help Freddie continue to have positive experiences in both of these areas by working with him prior to those visits to ensure continued growth and success.
Freddie has just started turning out with another gelding since his castration. He is slowly learning how to interact appropriately but still likes to use his teeth a lot during play. Any equine companions should be appropriately matched for a recently gelded young pony and introductions should be done slowly and carefully. He is currently barefoot, sound, and has no known limitations that would prevent him from getting into work. Freddie would make a wonderful prospect for many disciplines – from riding to driving to a liberty and games project, but he will need an adopter willing to take their time to give him a solid foundation first. If you have experience starting young, nervous horses, and are ready for your next project, look no further!
