MSPCA Law Enforcement Investigating How “Mazy” Was Injured
BOSTON, June 26, 2025 – The MSPCA-Angell is seeking a loving new home for a sweet older cat who came into its care with facial injuries and broken teeth, the organization announced today.
“Mazy” is a roughly nine-year-old domestic shorthair who was brought to the MSPCA-Angell June 5 with facial injuries, but more trauma was lurking beneath the surface.
“This cat was taken to a veterinarian in Worcester County who examined her recent injuries and also discovered she had sustained some previous injuries to her ribs,” explained MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection, Mike Keiley.
“The injuries seemed inconsistent with those sustained accidentally, so the veterinarian suspected potential animal cruelty and reached out to our Law Enforcement Department for help.”
Mazy’s previous owner surrendered her to the MSPCA-Angell on June 10.
“When Mazy came to us, she had bruising and swelling on her face, and some of her teeth were fractured,” Keiley elaborated.
It was just the beginning of a long healing process for the senior cat.
Tests Tell a Story
Diagnostic imaging and advanced testing at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston confirmed Mazy suffered jaw fractures, broken teeth, and facial swelling.
“We also learned that she had numerous rib fractures that are healing at different intervals,” Keiley detailed. “Unfortunately, it’s likely we’ll never really know how and when those injuries happened.”
MSPCA Law Enforcement is investigating how Mazy was injured. She underwent surgery on June 18 to remove 10 broken teeth and also address other dental issues associated with age.
“Despite the obvious discomfort from the swelling and bruising on her face, Mazy still tries to playfully headbutt staff treating her,” Keiley said. “She’s an amazing example of the resilience of animals—even though she’s hurt, she’s still leading with love and trust.”
“We’re doing everything we can to learn how this sweet cat was hurt, but we’re also focusing on getting her healed up and ready for a new home with adopters who will give her the affection and care she deserves,” he added.
Adopt Mazy!
Mazy is ready for adoption now. Interested adopters are asked to visit the MSPCA’s Boston Adoption Center during open hours (Tuesday – Sunday, noon – 3:00 p.m.) to adopt.
The MSPCA-Angell asks anyone able to donate to help offset the cost of Mazy’s care—as well as the care of other animals brought in by MSPCA Law Enforcement—to give at mspca.org/mazy.
