Clinical Study – Assessing Potential Effects of Trazodone in Older Boxers

We are currently recruiting patients for a resident research project. The project involves assessing potential effects of Trazodone on echocardiogram variables and arrhythmias in older Boxers (6-9 years old) with presumptive mild ARVC (arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, aka “Boxer cardiomyopathy”). Recent research studies have been performed evaluating Trazodone’s effects in normal / healthy dogs. The importance of this study is to ensure this medication is safe for cardiac patients with preexisting cardiac disease. This is especially important as Trazodone is a VERY common anti-anxiety drug used in veterinary medicine to reduce stress, especially for patients with in-hospital anxiety.

Below is a summary of the specific inclusion criteria and *FREE* diagnostics. Prior to enrolling in the study, screening tests will need to be performed to determine if the patient meets the criteria for occult / mild ARVC. If interested in the study and you would like more information, please contact Dr. Clinton Lynn (Cardiology Resident) at Clynn@mspca.org

Study Information:

1. Population

  • Boxers between the ages of 6-9 years old
  • Diagnosis of presumptive ARVC that ARE NOT receiving medications
  • Any otherwise healthy Boxer may be considered; however, we will need to do initial screening with a 24-hour Holter to ensure they meet the study qualifications
  • Unfortunately, dogs with significant medical issues or other cardiac diseases cannot be included in the study

2. Baseline diagnostics (Included in the study – aka FREE OF CHARGE to client)

    • Full echocardiogram
    • 24-hour Holter monitor evaluation
    • Full labwork including:
      • Complete blood count
      • Chemistry profile
      • T4
      • 4DX Snap
      • ARVC genetic testing
