Clinic Assistant Volunteer
Clinic Assistant volunteers play a vital role improving the lives of animals in our care and in our community! You’ll assist the shelter veterinary team as they conduct medical procedures, learn about animal healthcare, and contribute to the well-being of pets in need. This position will deepen your understanding of the critical role shelters play in animal welfare while making a meaningful impact. Responsibilities:
- Preparing and sterilizing surgical instruments and packs for animal surgeries.
- Ensuring that all medical instruments are cleaned and maintained properly.
- Assisting in the administration of medications as directed by staff, including oral medications and topical treatments.
- Cleaning kennels and resetting them for future patients.
- Observing and reporting any changes in the health or behavior of animals under care.
- Assisting in pre-surgical preparations as requested by staff
- Keeping the clinic area clean and sanitized, including exam rooms, surgery areas, and waiting areas.
- Miscellaneous support tasks as requested by staff.
Qualities:
- Able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
- Enjoys collaborating with others in a busy, fast-paced environment.
- Is observant and able to pick up on subtle animal body language or changing body conditions.
- Is self-motivated, disciplined, and maintains a high level of emotional intelligence.
- Always willing to learn new skills related to animal care and medical procedures.
Skills:
- Experience with record-keeping, data entry, and managing documentation.
- Familiarity with common medical procedures, terminology, and treatments.
- Basic knowledge of zoonotic disease and their symptoms.
- Able to handle physical tasks, such as lifting animals or cleaning.
- The ability to act fast and follow staff directives in emergency situations
- You must be able to remain active for your entire shift, which will involve standing, using a stepladder, crouching, reaching, and lifting.
- Able to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
- As this role requires frequent verbal and written communication, applicants must be highly proficient in English.
- Applicants should be capable of being in close proximity to surgeries and animals in process of recovering from anesthesia.
- Proficiency in using a computer without assistance, and learning new programs. All volunteers digitally log hours and use an online scheduling function.
Requirements:
- The ability to pass a CORI and background check
- Must be 18 years old
- Dependable transportation
- Attendance at a virtual orientation
- On-the-job training
Other:
- Current or previous volunteer or work experience in a clinic or hospital setting preferred, but not required for the right candidate.
- Equivalent skills gained in human clinics or hospitals can be applied to this role!
Time Commitment:
- A weekly 4 hour shift on the same day and time each week.
- Minimum of a 6-month commitment
- We are unable to accommodate requests for alterations to the schedule. Please ensure you will be available for the full duration of a current open shift before applying.
Current Needs:
- A weekly 4-hour shift from 11am – 3pm on any week day.
- A volunteer experienced in delivering medication to animals in a professional setting is needed in the mornings and evenings during the week.
