Food Attendant & Shelter Team (FAST) Volunteer
Position Summary
Food Attendant & Shelter Team (FAST) volunteers assist staff in keeping the animals fed and the shelter clean, sanitized, and organized. These volunteers love the idea of nurturing our animals through food while the thought of laundry also excites them and cleaning dirty dishes may be their forte. FAST volunteers help keep the shelter running efficiently and allow for the animal care team to focus on more animal oriented tasks to help them get adopted… well, fast!
Their primary duty will be food prep, either breakfast or dinner, for the animal population at our shelter. Other regular responsibilities include doing laundry, cleaning dishes, wiping down high-use surfaces, sweeping and mopping floors, prepping enrichment items, and taking out trash.
Volunteers will be given training and resources to stay up to date with considerate approaches protocol when working in the proximity of animals. It is important to maintain consistency and routine as much as possible, therefore the volunteer will be expected to follow protocol and the guidance of staff closely.
Responsibilities:
- Efficiently prep dinner dependent on animal weights.
- Assist in distributing food to animals.
- Create and store enrichment items for dogs and cats.
- Wash, dry, and put away dishes, litter boxes, and other items.
- Wash, dry, fold, and put away laundry.
- Sort donations.
- Empty trash and recycling.
- Clean and disinfect shelter areas.
- Train other volunteers on Shelter Care tasks.
- Miscellaneous tasks as requested by staff.
- In times of high need, F.A.S.T. volunteers may be asked to assist with cleaning animal kennels.
- This role will not involve hands-on animal care, but directly supports their needs.
A successful volunteer in this role will have:
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Ability to do basic math and fractions.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a self-directed manner.
- Willingness to clean areas soiled with feces and urine.
- Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment. This role may not be a suitable match for individuals who do best with limited, routine tasks.
- Ability to perform physical labor for the duration of shift, use stepladder, and lift and/or pull up to 50 pounds.
- A can-do attitude is a must for this role!
Requirements:
- Attendance at virtual orientation. These are offered once a month, on weekday evenings.
- Attendance at an in-person training shift.
Commitment Level:
- One weekly 2-4 hour shift on a set day and time. The primary responsibility of this position is food prep and clean-up, which typically takes 2 hours. We are looking for volunteers who are able to work efficiently, but flex and stay a bit longer if their tasks haven’t been completed during their assigned shift. Please ensure one of the shifts listed as currently available matches your schedule before applying.
- Minimum Commitment is 6 consecutive months after onboarding. Commitments may start a month after acceptance and is dependent on your availability for an orientation and training. Extended commitments welcome!
