Hillside Cemetery Gardening Volunteer – Methuen

Description:

Hillside volunteers contribute to the upkeep and beautification of Hillside Acre Animal Cemetery during the late spring, summer, and fall. Operated by the MSPCA at Nevins Farm for over 100 years, Hillside provides a tranquil resting place for pets. Staff and volunteers keep the space well-maintained through landscaping, weeding, and watering. With spring-fall schedule, it’s a great option for those who winter elsewhere!

Responsibilities:

  • Volunteers will weed, water, rake, and perform general clean-up of burial sites and cemetery grounds.
  • Volunteers may be asked to assist with planting, trimming, and pruning.
  • Volunteers will assist with fall clean-up, including raking.
  • Assist staff with miscellaneous tasks as needed.

Qualities/Skills:

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. At times, volunteers will have little to no supervision and will still be expected to efficiently complete their tasks.
  • Ability to perform physical labor for duration of shift, carry full 2 gallon water cans throughout cemetery, and lift up to 30lbs.
  • This role requires the ability to work outside in hot, sunny, and humid conditions for two consecutive hours.
  • This role involves walking, standing, kneeling, and bending for extended periods. The terrain is uneven in some areas, with trip hazards including burial stones.
  • Past landscaping or gardening experience is a plus.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants for this role must have a valid driver’s license and their own personal vehicle.
  • Attendance at a virtual orientation is required prior to your start date.

Time Commitment:

  • A weekly 2 hour shift on a set day and time. Volunteers are not expected to show for this task on rainy days, as watering is then not needed.
  • Current available shifts are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 8:30am-10:30am or 9am-11am.
  • We are ideally seeking applicants who can begin the week of May 19th and stay through the natural end of fall clean-up season. This is usually sometime in November. However, college students who are available May-August will also be considered. We are unable to consider those only available June-August.
