MSPCA Boston Clinic Surgery Assistant

Description:
Assist our veterinary staff with medical and surgical procedures. In this fast-paced position you’ll be doing everything from surgery prep, monitoring recovery, and even post-surgical clean up! This is a complex position that requires a high skill level; as such, candidates who move on from the phone screen stage will be scheduled for a working interview to make sure the position is a good fit.

Responsibilities:

  • Helping with surgical prep once animals are sedated for surgery
    • Trim nails, monitor breathing, lubricate eyes and use electric clippers to prep animals for surgery
    • Using surgical scrub to sterilize surgical field
  • Moving patients from the operating room to recovery cages
  • Monitoring patients before and after surgery
  • Potential to learn additional skills, such as extubating and administering injections such as feline and canine distemper vaccines and microchip
  • Feeding animals after surgery
  • Clean and sterilize endotracheal tubes and surgical instruments
  • Fold and wrap surgical towels and drapes
  • Sterilizing surgical towels and drapes
  • Assisting with housekeeping duties
    • Laundry (wash, dry, fold)
    • Animal care and cleaning
    • Clean and set up kennels for new animals

Qualities/Skills:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Receptive to ongoing feedback
  • Able to meet the physical demands of this role, which require variable amounts of standing, walking, bending, reaching, and stooping.
  • Able to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • As this role requires frequent verbal and written communication, applicants must be fluent in English.
  • Proficiency in using a computer without assistance, and learning new programs. All volunteers digitally log hours and use an online scheduling function

Requirements:

  • Working interview and on-the-job training
  • Applicants must be 18 or older
  • Preference given to those with academic or professional experience in veterinary medicine, or prior animal handling experience
  • Preference given to those who can commit to a recurring, weekly shift for a minimum of 6 months
    • Exceptional candidates who can commit to 2-3 shifts per week for the duration of the summer (approximately late May through August) may be considered

Available Shifts:

  • There are two available shifts:
    • 8:00am – 12pm: Tuesdays, Wednesdays
    • 12pm-4:00pm: Thursdays
