Shelter Medications – Methuen

Description:

This role is an opportunity for qualified individuals who wish to use pre-existing experience and skills to benefit animals in our shelter. Using daily meds sheets, shelter medications volunteers will assist staff in preparing, distributing, and administering medications to dogs, cats, and various small animals.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Follow protocols to prepare, distribute, and administer medications.
  • Ensure animals have ingested oral medications.
  • Keep accurate records of medications given.

 

Qualities/Skills:

  • Significant experience medicating animals at a past or present job, volunteer role, or vet/tech school program. Please provide details in your application. We are unable to accept volunteers without relevant experience.
  • Ability to work both independently and with others.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Medications are distributed on a schedule. Applicants for this role should be highly reliable and capable of consistently arriving on time.
  • The ability to pass a background check.
  • The ability to safely physically restrain animals as necessary for medications.
  • Proficiency in administering medications orally, topically, and via injections required.
  • Experience with administering IV fluids preferred.
  • Proficiency in using a computer without assistance, and learning new programs. All volunteers digitally log hours and use an online scheduling function. This role may involve additional computer use regarding medications.

 

Other:

  • Reliable transportation required. Applicants for this role should have a valid driver’s license and their own personal vehicle. If you do not meet this criteria, we have roles which are less strict regarding transportation and request you instead apply to one of those.

 

Requirements:

  • Attendance at a virtual orientation.
  • Completion of a background check through MSPCA-Angell.
  • Hands-on training shifts with staff.

 

Time Commitment:

  • A weekly one hour shift on a set day and time. If accepted, your shift will be selected during onboarding.
  • Current open morning (7am-8am) shifts: Monday.
  • Current open afternoon (4pm-5pm) shifts: Monday, Thursday, Friday.
  • Minimum of 6 consecutive months. Longer commitments welcome!
