Description:
Shelter Care volunteers ensure the shelter environment remains safe, clean and as comfortable as possible for animals, staff, and volunteers. Housing animals generates a great deal of laundry, dishes, and crates to clean! Volunteers to complete these tasks, as well as sort and put away items generously donated to us.
Responsibilities:
- Wash, dry, fold, and put away laundry.
- Wash, dry, and put away dishes, litter boxes, and other items.
- Sort donations; keeping, discarding or recycling items according to our shelter needs.
- Empty trash and recycling.
- Clean and disinfect shelter areas.
- Train other volunteers on Shelter Care tasks.
- Miscellaneous tasks as requested by staff.
- This role will not involve hands-on animal care, but directly supports their needs.
Qualities/Skills:
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to follow direction.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a self-directed manner.
- Willingness to clean areas soiled with feces and urine.
- Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment. This role may not be a suitable match for individuals who do best with limited, routine tasks.
- Ability to perform physical labor for the duration of shift, use stepladder, and lift and/or pull up to 50 pounds.
- A can-do attitude is a must for this role!
- You find satisfaction in clearing clutter and letting go of unnecessary things.
- Proficiency in using a computer without assistance, and learning new programs. All volunteers digitally log hours and use an online scheduling function.
Requirements:
- Attendance at virtual orientation. These are offered 2-3 times a month, on weekdays.
- Attendance at a training shift. This will likely need to be at a different day/time than your regular weekly shift.
Time Commitment:
- One weekly 2 hour shift on a set day and time. Please ensure one of the shifts listed as currently available matches your schedule before applying.
- 7am-9am: Sunday
- 11am-1pm: Saturday
- 1pm-3pm: Saturday, Sunday
- 3pm-5pm: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday
- In addition to the above, we are seeking additional help on weekdays, with a focus on donation sorting and mentoring new volunteers. In addition to meeting all other criteria in this role, those interested should have leadership experience, work well with others, be excellent at following directions, love to de-clutter, and have a flexible weekday daytime schedule. Please note your interest in becoming a shelter care mentor on your application.
- Minimum Commitment for most applicants is 3 months after onboarding is complete. Trainings may require one-time weekend availability. Extended commitments welcome!
- Those interested in the shelter care mentor role will be expected to make a six month minimum commitment instead of a three month minimum commitment.
