Expansion Opens as Organization Prepares to Welcome Animals Impacted by Catastrophic Texas Flooding
Centerville, Mass., July 9, 2025 – The MSPCA-Angell will soon increase its animal intake by roughly 30%—about 400 more animals—each year thanks to new isolation space at its Cape Cod Adoption Center, the organization announced today.
The 1,600 square foot area is opening shortly before the expected arrival of animals impacted by the catastrophic flooding in Texas.
“With natural disasters becoming more frequent and the ongoing dog population crisis, we knew we needed more space for transports as soon as possible,” said Colleen Evans, director of operations at the MSPCA Cape Cod Adoption Center.
“We started using existing space on the Cape for relocation last year, but we knew it still wasn’t enough to meet the demand.”
Evans says the MSPCA-Angell accounted for 65% of the total number of cats brought into Massachusetts from other states in 2024, a 5% increase from the year before—numbers that are only expected to increase as the expansion becomes operational.
A National and Local Lifeline
Not only will the space increase the MSPCA-Angell’s transport capacity, but it will also be a vital resource for Cape Cod specifically.
“When law enforcement agencies on the Cape are investigating animal cruelty, neglect, or hoarding, the new space can be used to house victims while those cases are being handled,” Evans explained.
“We’re one of the only organizations in the state able to help with those kinds of situations, especially on the Cape, so the increased cage space is really vital locally, as well as for out-of-state transports.”
“Plus, additional space in any of our facilities gives us more flexibility, so this will also help with law enforcement cases throughout Massachusetts,” she added.
The new space, funded in part by a grant from the Thomas C. McGowan Fund for Animals of The Cape Cod Foundation, officially opens on July 10, a date the MSPCA-Angell is marking with a special ribbon cutting:
