24/7 Emergency and Critical Care in Waltham

The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) service at the MSPCA-Angell West (Waltham, MA) is available at any hour of the day, 365 days a year, for clients whose pets need immediate medical care for life-threatening trauma or disease. Referring veterinarians may alert staff to an incoming case by calling 781-902-8400.

  • Dedicated critical care team of senior staff doctors, interns and nurses

  • Emergency blood transfusions and blood products to treat trauma or immune disease
  • Repeated blood transfusions to manage chronically ill patients
  • Oxygen administration
  • Management of severe pancreatitis
  • Management of diabetic ketoacidosis

  • Management of open abdomen
  • Use of enteral and parenteral nutrition techniques
  • Point-of-care, 24 hour monitoring capabilities include:
    • Direct and indirect arterial blood pressure

    • Co-oximetry when acetominophen or carbon monoxide poisonings are suspected.
    • Blood osmolality
    • Colloid oncotic pressure to customize fluid therapies and medication based on patient needs

    • Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG)
