Meet Buddy! This guy is quite worried here at the shelter (look at those eyes…) so we are taking it slow and letting him adjust at his pace. We aren’t sure how he will be in a home – he may blossom completely outside the shelter, or he may be what we lovingly call a “spirit cat”. We often can’t predict how a spirit cat will be after they settle in – some become comfortable around their family and choose to spend time with them by sharing the same space or allowing some petting, while others continue to prefer to hide when there’s any commotion. Spirit cats generally prefer to spend their time around other cats and make an excellent kitty friend to a cat already in the home. Our staff can help prepare adopters to welcome a spirit cat into a quiet home, but patience and understanding will go a long way with Buddy.
Stop by our Boston Adoption Center to meet Buddy. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm - 3pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Blueberry is a younger female rabbit who can be shy at first, but once comfortable can be social and friendly. She is litter box trained, and has a good history living with older kids (teens). She will prefer to live in a quieter home, possibly with a well matched rabbit companion. She does have a history of chewing on everything around, and will benefit from a rabbit proofed space and lots of appropriate chewing enrichment.
We recommend providing a safe indoor enclosure that allows a rabbit to stretch their legs and move around. The needs of each rabbit are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the rabbit you are interested in, please let us know in your inquiry! We are happy to provide guidance and advice

They have not had the most socialization with people, which can lead to them being a bit nippy when hands get too close. Nole and Pepper enjoy watching tv and listening to music together. This pretty pair is looking for a patient family who can help them settle in at their own pace.

Meet Airport Security! Airport Security is a nervous young man that will benefit from a quiet home that will give him the time and patience he needs to settle in. Airport Security enjoys other cats, and would benefit from a confident cat friend to show him the ropes. Since being in the shelter, he has so limited interest in interacting with people, and may always be more of a “cat’s cat” than a people cat. But he does enjoy chasing and playing with his cat friends! But he does enjoy With the right adopter, we are sure he can settle in and become a wonderful companion.

Billie is a smushy young pittie mix looking for her new home! This sweet kiddo likes to hit the trails to explore and sniff around, and loves to wrap it all up with some snacks and couch time with her people. Bille can be a bit reserved at first when making new friends, but warms up quickly and is looking for a patient family who can give an adopted dog some time to decompress in the new home. Billie has had a hard time meeting dogs in her short life, so she would prefer to be the only dog of the family!
Billie’s a dog with a heart as big as her size, so her greetings can be a little on the rude side – potential adopters should be prepared to help her learn how to get someone’s attention without jumping on them! Luckily she is a foodie, and loves to train using positive reinforcement methods.
This sweet, smushy girl has been through a few transitions recently, and may need a gentle start, but once she feels secure, she’ll reward you with endless love and loyalty!
If you think Billie could be a good match for your home and would like to learn more, stop by our Nevins Farm Adoption Center in Methuen. We have open adoption hours Tuesday – Sunday from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm with no appointment or application needed.

Meet sweet Barnaby! This older and distinguished gentleman has had a tough couple of years without a lot of attention and human interaction. As a result he can still be quite nervous when doing something new or when he is unsure of what is being asked of him. At 20 years young, we are currently looking for a companion home where this sweet boy can enjoy the retirement he so deserves.
Barnaby was diagnosed with EOTRH by our veterinarian and recently had surgery to remove his incisors which were causing him a good deal of pain. The procedure went very well and he is on the road to recovery – we can already tell he is in a lot less pain. Barnaby is looking for a very special adopter who is familiar with senior horse care – bonus if you already have a good equine dentist! Barnaby is otherwise up to date on medical and farrier care. He can be nervous for some veterinary and handling interactions but stands very well for the farrier.
Barnaby has lived out 24/7 with access to a run-in shed, but is currently stalled overnight with day turn out. He has lived with mares and geldings and generally prefers as much turn out time as possible!
Interested in learning more about Barnaby? Please fill out an adoption inquiry!

He is also looking for time and space to decompress and learn all about his new home. We dont know if Mulberry has lived with another dog but has met some dogs while with us. Mulberry could live with another dog given a thoughtful introduction. We do not know if he has lived with children or cats. He could possibly live with a cat given a thoughtful introduction. Meet Arthur, a 3 year old Husky with a heart full of potential. We have limited history on him, but know that he was living in a bubble, meaning he was not meeting strangers or other dogs, and is very fearful as a result–Arthur can be shy and uncertain of the world around him, but with patience and a gentle approach to training, he is learning that the world is not so scary.
As Arthur has an abnormal background, he is looking for an adopter who can offer him a calm, low-traffic environment where he can continue to grow and learn. He will need someone who’s ready to teach him all the basics, such as housebreaking, walking on a leash, and general manners, using positive reinforcement training (Arthur loves snacks and is very smart, so he’s a great training buddy!). As Arthur is worried and has a lot he’s working on, he says no thank you to living with other pets for now, please!

This rat is part of a large surrender so we have less individual information about them. The group of females have a good history living with other females, and are social with people. They tolerate handling, but may still benefit from additional socialization, and an adopter that understands it may take them some time to warm up to their new home and the people in it. These rats will need to go home in pairs (or more) or to a home with existing female rats to have as companion.
Rats are nocturnal, highly social and extremely intelligent animals! Due to the highly social nature of rats we prefer to match them with homes with existing rats, or to adopters looking to take home two or more rats. Rats can be food driven (and great foragers!) making them excellent animals to train. We always recommend the use of positive reinforcement training with your animals, and are happy to provide more information on this topic.
We recommend providing a safe indoor enclosure that allows the rat plenty of space to exercise. The minimum cage size should be 2’x2.5’x2’, with good ventilation (no glass enclosures) and must have a solid base. Preferably the shelter includes multiple levels, with appropriate use of linens or paper bedding and lots of rat appropriate toys. Rats should never be housed with other animals, each species should always have its own housing.
The needs of each rat are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the rat you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Say hey to Elvis! This handsome guy is ready for his new home.
Pigeons can be tamed but tend to be more “hands off” birds. They tend to vocalize throughout the day with a “coo”, dissimilar to the screeching or whistling of many other birds. Pigeons can be found around the world, and can live up to 10 years with proper nutrition and care. We recommend that doves live in pairs or groups whenever possible.
We recommend a cage that is at least 32”x23” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ¾” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of flat surfaces to perch on, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. Unlike many other species of birds, pigeons are unable to climb up cage bars, and tend to move back and forth making a wider cage more appealing to them. Pigeons should be provided with regular opportunities for bathing, and unlike parrots require grit as part of their regular diet to aid in digestion.
The needs of each pigeon are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the dove you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.
