“Coco Chanel” Bounces Back from Surgery, Now Seeks Forever Home
BOSTON and Centerville, Mass., Aug. 19, 2016 – A cat nicknamed “Coco Chanel” by staffers at the MSPCA-Cape Cod in Centerville, Mass. used at least one of her nine lives—likely after a run-in with a car—left her seriously injured before a Mashpee couple pulled the scared two-year-old feline out from under their storage shed, the organization announced today.
Coco underwent a two-hour operation at the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston on Aug. 18 and, according to Dr. William Rosenblad of the hospital’s dentistry service, she is on the mend.
“Unfortunately, due to the amount of time that passed between the surgery and her initial injury, there was only so much we could do to repair her dislocated lower jaw.” The team did remove her fractured upper canine teeth, however and Dr. Rosenblad believes her prognosis is excellent, and that she will live pain free after she recovers.
An Unknown Back Story
No one has stepped forward to claim Coco, nor does she have a microchip or identification tags. She is one of hundreds of injured or sick animals who come to the MSPCA-Cape Cod every year who have been forced to make a go of it outside on their own.
“Unfortunately her story is not unique and our hearts break whenever we see an otherwise friendly and beautiful cat who may never have had a responsible, loving home,” said MSPCA-Cape Cod Director Mary Sarah Fairweather.
Coco also has a kink in her tail, an indication that the appendage had previously been broken—by what means remains a mystery—and has healed on its own.
Fairweather said that despite her painful injuries Coco remains friendly and thrills to the attention she has received from adoption center staffers, as well as the medical team at Angell. “This is a cat who deserves the best medical care and a wonderful and safe home. We’re not going to rest until she has that.”
Call for Adopters
Coco spent a day recovering at Angell and is now on her way back to the Cape Cod adoption center, where the search for her forever home has already begun. Readers interested in adoption can contact the adoption center directly by emailing capeadoptions@mspca.org.
The MSPCA-Cape Cod will have spent about $2,000 on Coco’s care. Readers interested in helping to offset this care—or pay for the medical care for animals like Coco—may do so by donating here.
