MSPCA-Cape Cod Unveils New Sponsors, Big Prizes for Second Annual Polar Plunge

Super Bowl Sunday Again Kicks off with a Dive in the Atlantic for Brave Animal Lovers!

BOSTON and Centerville, Mass., Feb. 1, 2016 – As New Englanders prepare for the Super Bowl by crock-potting chili and adjusting their thermostats, dozens of (very) brave bathers will dash from the cold sand of Mayflower Beach in Dennis, Mass. into the frigid Atlantic during the second annual MSPCA-Cape Cod Polar Plunge, all to raise thousands of dollars to care for animals at the MSPCA-Cape Cod, the organization announced today.

The 2016 Polar Plunge takes place at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016.  Online registration is now open and plungers are encouraged to sign up early, raise as much money as they can to help animals and vie for big prizes.

The MSPCA-Cape Cod has pulled out all the stops to make this year’s plunge extra fun (but no less cold!)—with big prizes for top individual and team fundraisers, including a New England Patriots Jersey signed by Julian Edelman, a $600 boat rental courtesy of Nauset Marine, a $250 gift certificate from Whole Foods, $200 worth of gift certificates to Tomatoes Restaurant in Sandwich, and more.

Local corporate sponsors—including Spartan, Agway Cape Cod, Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, Hyannis Toyota, Transaction Resources Inc., as well as official media sponsor Cape Cod Broadcasting—have stepped up to support the event, which last year raised over $7,000 to care for the animals at the MSPCA’s Cape Cod adoption center in Centerville.   This year, the MSPCA-Cape Cod hopes to double the amount of money raised.

Raise the Most and Win Big!
The success of last year’s Polar Plunge ushered an icy wave of community and sponsor support to this year’s event.  Fabulous prizes are now in the offing for participants in the following categories—and everyone who raises $50 (or more) gets an official Super Bowl Sunday Polar Bear sweatshirt!

  • Top Individual Fundraiser: Signed Edelman jersey
  • First Runner Up Individual Fundraiser: $250 Whole Foods certificate
  • Top Fundraising Team: Nauset Marine rental
  • First Runner Up Fundraising Team: $200 worth of gift certificates to Tomatoes
  • Most Impressive Plunger: Gift certificates to Sam Diego’s and Royal II restaurants
  • Longest Distance Travelled to Plunge Plunger: This prize will be awarded to the plunger who drove, hiked, biked or otherwise traveled the furthest to do his or her best for animals.

Dunk the President!
Pre-registration has taken on a new urgency this year because, according to MSPCA-Cape Cod Director Mary Sarah Fairweather, MSPCA president and Sandwich resident Carter Luke may take the plunge—if a critical mass of registrants sign up early.  “If we get 100 plungers registered before Feb. 7 then [Luke] will definitely plunge for animals!”

Post-Dunk Warm-Up
Participants are invited to warm up at the post-plunge thaw which will take place at Oliver & Plancks Tavern in nearby Yarmouth Port just after the event.

Fairweather stressed that even those who are not willing to take the plunge can participate in the event, which is sure to become an annual tradition for Cape Cod animal lovers.  “As a plunger myself I can say that everyone who jumps in appreciates the roar of the crowd as they make their way out.  I encourage everyone who loves animals to come out and cheer on the plungers!”
