Cape Cod Volunteer Program

Everyone interested in becoming a volunteer for the MSPCA-Angell goes through the same process – an individual will submit an application and the Volunteer Coordinator will contact that person if their availability matches our needs. If contacted, the applicant will have a phone interview with the Volunteer Coordinator to learn more about the individual’s interests and skills and to discuss the needs of the volunteer program and available roles.

The prospective volunteer will then be scheduled to come in for a tour and may be selected to attend a working interview to determine if the role fits the person’s expectations and interests. If invited to join the volunteer program, the individual will watch a recorded volunteer orientation where they will learn about the MSPCA history, programs we offer, and the role of the volunteer. Some volunteer roles require additional training, such as completing online training modules.

You must be 16 or older to volunteer. Individuals ages 16 and 17 will be required to obtain and turn in a completed MA Youth Work Permit after they have been accepted into the program. If you or your child is under the age of 16, you can view other opportunities to help the Cape Cod MSPCA.

Commitment will vary by role. We have commitment details listed within the full description of each volunteer role. Most require an on-property commitment once a week on a set day and time, ranging from 2-4 hours for a total of six months. This commitment is due to the nature of our training program, which provides plenty of training to ensure the volunteer is confident in performing their role independently.

Sick days or vacation time does not play in to the commitment as long as you are notifying your Volunteer Coordinator!

Yes! Planned vacations or sick days do not play into your six month commitment as long you communicate your schedule with your Volunteer Coordinator. If you will not be able to volunteer for more than one month during the six month commitment, consider applying after that time period.

We are not able to have volunteers bring children to their volunteer shift.

We cannot accommodate requests for drop-in volunteering. All volunteers must go through our full onboarding process, which can take a month or more.

Anyone interested in volunteering with us for this purpose must submit a letter of recommendation. The letter must be written by a professional or someone who is not a family member or friend.

In limited circumstances, we may be able to fulfill requests for community service hours assigned by court. Court-ordered community service must be approved in advance. Verification to courts will not be provided unless your service need was disclosed in advance, and approved. To apply for approval, email capevolunteer@mspca.org with the number of hours needed, the date the service is due by, the offense you were assigned community service for, your full name, and the contact number of someone at the court who assigned your service. Include “Court Community Service” in your email title. If approved, you will be eligible for the Shelter Care volunteer role. Depending on hour many hours you are assigned, it may take 3 months to 1 year to complete your hours.

We have enrolled many students seeking community service hours for National Honor Society or college applications. To best meet our needs, our volunteer program is aimed at volunteers able to make an extended commitment. If you are seeking only a small amount of hours for your community service, our program will not be a match. You must be able to complete the minimum required commitment in the role you are applying for. Housekeeping is typically the most convenient role for students seeking service hours!

Whatever the reason you are seeking community service hours, we cannot accommodate requests to complete hours in a short turnaround time. All accepted volunteers must go through our full onboarding process, which can take a month or more after you are accepted.

While socialization is important, it is part of a larger volunteer role. You must be willing to do everything involved in volunteering, not just the “fun” stuff! Emptying litter boxes, scrubbing dirty food bowls, and washing loads (and loads) of soiled bedding are all part of volunteer life here at the Cape Cod MSPCA.

While roles involving animal care attract many applicants, we have a high need and lower application rate for volunteers in housekeeping and communications. These roles are critical to keeping our shelter running smoothly.

If you are fully bilingual in Spanish and English, your skills would be ever so helpful in communications or Community Outreach roles!

Observation of surgeries is not allowed.

Many animals in need of foster homes are adults who are pregnant, sick, under socialized, or not thriving in a shelter environment. Some may be hospice cases. If you apply to be a foster volunteer, you must be willing to take on more than young, healthy animals. Most animals placed in foster are cats or small animals, like rabbits or guinea pigs. We are actively searching for dog foster homes as well! All animals are placed in foster on a case by case basis with those decisions being made by staff. Interested in fostering? Yes! Staff and volunteers are here 365 days a year, 7 days a week. Shifts take place between 8AM and 5PM. While not all areas have weekend openings, there is usually at least one that does. Shelter Care in particular has a high need for weekend volunteers! Please review the detailed volunteer role descriptions for current openings above.

Please note, we do not have evening volunteer options available.

We do not have remote volunteer needs, aside from fostering animals.

Every applicant is evaluated for acceptance as an individual. Should you apply, it cannot be dependent upon someone else being accepted into our volunteer program, or being able to volunteer on the same shift. You should have your own transportation which does not rely on another person being able to volunteer at the same time.

The Cape Cod MSPCA is happy to welcome volunteers of differing physical and intellectual abilities when accommodations are possible. Volunteers requiring 1:1 support must be able to provide a supporting co-volunteer for each shift, who will be responsible for making sure all shift requirements are done completely, correctly, and safely. The supporting co-volunteer must be the same each week. Any new co-volunteer will need to go through the full volunteer onboarding process.

Co-volunteers are responsible for explaining and modeling all volunteer policies and guidelines, and actively participating in each shift. Co-volunteers found in violation of any of these policies, or general volunteer policies, may be asked to pause the volunteer service of their differently-abled volunteer, or the pair may have to leave the program.

As an MSPCA volunteer, you’ll need to do things the way we do them! This might be different from the way you interact with animals in a home environment. While animals are at our shelter, we have protocols that must be followed for the safety of staff, volunteers, and the animals themselves.

While we appreciate your desire to help, we are only seeking volunteers for the roles we have listed.
